Startup Portugal, newsletter - Road 2 Web Summit (R2WS) - Web Summit.

WEEK 35 // September 3, 2021

SEED CONTENT

// Opening remarks

You probably didn't even notice that I did a very small but needed break, just to be back this week at full force. We are now working on several things for our community until the end of the year (August is over and everyone starts to talk about year-end), but right now one of the biggest focuses is on our program Road 2 Web Summit. The deadline for application is right around the corner and we have already received quite a few interesting applications. Will you miss this unique opportunity to showcase your startup?

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, every year, through Road 2 Web Summit (R2WS), we take a group of the best Portuguese startups to the biggest technological event in the world. On our way, we prepare them to reach their maximum potential on a Bootcamp designed in collaboration with Web Summit.

On its 6th edition, R2WS aims to reach up to 100 startups based in Portugal, supporting them with 50% of the cost of Web Summit's ALPHA startup package along with an internationalization opportunity (via Collision Conference 2022, in Toronto) and an intensive training program centered on key content for each participant.

Applications are open until the 6th of September.

You already know the drill. I love a good chat, so don't hesitate to drop me a line at [email protected]. I’m also open to events to include in this newsletter, suggestions or any comments. Feel free to say hi!

Have a great weekend!

// Mobi Summit's Startup Of The Year Award is back

The PMS2021 Startup of the Year Award initiative is part of the Portugal Mobi Summit project, whose focus for 2021 will be “Mobility 2030: The paradigm is changing, are we?”.

It aims to debate and boost knowledge and innovation related to disruptive dimensions of mobility: autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification, and shared mobility, thus fostering entrepreneurship and stimulating the creation of new mobility concepts and solutions. Apply here.

// Shameless self promotion

If you opened this newsletter you already know: we are promoting our program Road 2 Web Summit to exhaustion. But that's only because of how good the program is. To prove it, just check our alumni testemony.

Impact Hub Lisbon - newsletter

Hello again, we hope you enjoyed your summer and recharged your batteries for an intense second semester of 2021!

We suggested on our Instagram a few books to get you warmed up for the months ahead but another very important, not exactly light beach reading, came out last month and it's impossible to dismiss it: the IPCC report. The facts it outlines might not come as surprise for most of us in the Impact Hub community, but at least they have now used more powerful language to state that the climate crisis is ‘unequivocally’ caused by human activities. Every bit of warming matters in terms of creating different outcomes that define now the type of life we will have in the coming decades. We can feel all doom and gloom about it but we can also roll up our sleeves and make our very best to achieve positive outcomes. What are you doing to help keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius?

We are challenging small and medium fashion enterprises to transition to circular and sustainable models. Come and join us for an info session about our new acceleration programme Small But Perfect. We will explain what the programme is all about, dedicate time to answer questions and, most importantly, introduce you to fellow sustainable fashion entrepreneurs whom you might partner with to submit a proposal. Selected partnerships will receive € 10,275 grants to develop and showcase their products and services.

In order to attend, please register by clicking the button below until September 6th.

Startup Estonia - newsletter

Read our Freshest Half-Year Report on the Estonian Startup Ecosystem

easing into autumn

Hey, y’all!

We hope you managed to take some time to decompress and recharge your batteries! Keep on reading to catch up on the biggest updates in the Estonian startup ecosystem and get an extra energy boost for the beginning of autumn!

For starters, let's go over the most startup-minded business festival that just took place and transformed Tartu into a mecca of entrepreneurship for the whole 3 days. sTARTUp Day 2021 brought together over 4000 visitors and 100+ world-class speakers to celebrate its 5th anniversary and was outstanding as usual with a positive atmosphere for networking and fantastic startup pitches!

As part of sTARTUp Day, Startup Estonia held a bunch of empowering and vibrant events to liven up the festival. Take a look at the highlights of Global Founders in Estonia meetup Vol. 14 and Startup Community Meetup that already became traditional. It also happened to be the last community meetup hosted by incredible Liisi Org as a startup community development manager. She's been relentlessly supercharging the startup ecosystem for the past 2.5 years and has done tremendous work for the local startup community during this time! From the 7th of September, the new startup community development manager will be Sandra Saarniit.

We also finally released a much-anticipated half-year report on the Estonian Startup Ecosystem! In other news, World Summit Awards (WSA) has an open call for Estonian startups. We're going to share more details shortly, but in the meantime, you can still get acquainted with their submission guide.

The last couple of months were also prolific in terms of investments. In August, ride-hailing unicorn company Bolt has raised massive €600M funding round, increasing its valuation to more than €4B to boost its new grocery delivery service. As for July, Single.Earth, a platform that tokenizes nature for its ecological value, has secured €6,6M in capital through a seed funding round. In addition, both white-label SaaS shipping startup Outvio and Tallinn-based ‘one-stop-shop’ for online businesses Montonio have landed €2,5M each. It's also worth noting investments received by Eurora, Bisly, Remato, Fusebox, Postoplan, and Income.

May the autumn be filled with great achievements, meeting interesting people, and a series of long-awaited winning streaks!
