Disconnect to reconnect… to find space for the unspoken whispers of internal desires…

to sense the undercurrent of thoughts, the feelings that carry each idea, that carry us forward.

Into each next moment, and color each memory…

It is who we are. Always there and yet, rarely heard.

Strength is recognizing your weaknesses as it gives you options:
1. Accept weakness
2. Make changes for long term
3. Get help in short term
4. Reframe perceived weakness
Now, aware of your weaknesses, you can adapt or not… no longer clueless about why negative events happened to you.

I’ve forgotten how to write. Sucked in by the incredible seduction of comfort… lulled into a stupor by the calming repetition of meaningless tasks… I’ve forgotten who I am.

I write because there is a ME to write… thoughts in my head… some that need to be expressed… some that *want to be expressed…

But writing allows me to see those thoughts, captured, even if for just a moment… I can see me again… in whatever shape or form I’m in.

As much as I am evolving over the years, or even if it’s just the random mood of the moment … there’s still some part of me there. Writing each word, phrase, line… it lets me peel away the layers, shed the layers of fat… fat from the overconsumption of this social media stuff.

And writing reveals me back to me… as I venture back into the discomfort… hopefully I find there’s even more me that i have yet discovered.

After 4 years, I still love this group reflection. There’s something about coming together and looking back that is so meaningful. Despite our personal differences, we actually shared so much.

So the results? Well, the overall sentiment was good, best ever actually! BUT… I’m afraid that doesn’t tell the whole story. It was an uneven year and still difficult for many. Let’s look at each aspect more deeply (in the slides above).

If you took this time to reflect with us here, thank you! We’re often so alone as creatives, and I appreciate any opportunity to come together, exchange reflections, insights and experiences. It truly fuels me! 🔥🔥🔥

Meet your heroes. Not to admire them, but to study them. To ask them questions, to observe their actions, to find their inspirations.

I spent much time in my 20’s and 30’s doing just that. I asked them out for coffee and got way more yes’s than no’s. I wanted to know what made them tick, how they saw the world, what books they read (or didn’t read), how they navigated their path, the decisions they made along the way.

In doing so, I started to see the patterns. Their growth, success, achievements… were not accidental or based on luck. They played an active part in it.

And here’s the hard part: do not copy it. They have their path, their goals, and their personality. It was in talking to the dozens of interesting creatives, entrepreneurs, and leaders that let me gather many bits of inspiration. In total, I had to abstract that all and reinterpret it in my way.

I’m eternally grateful for all the coffees and chats along the way.

Motivation is THE great differentiator. I am reminded of this again and again as I look at my to do list… and I instead choose to procrastinate.

Yet, there’s never enough beach volleyball… because I’m absolutely OBSESSED these days. Instagram tutorials, YouTube games, and as much play time as I can get on the weekends.

We shouldn’t wonder why we are so bad or inefficient at somethings, but instead ask ourselves what we are obsessed with? What consumes our mind, heart and soul? What is motivating us currently?

And “currently” is the operative word there. As we evolve… our boredom evolves with us… our fascinations shift… curiosities grow slowly into obsessions… over time.

Which means… if you pay attention to your curiosities, you will find your future. Motivation is THE great differentiator.

Intuition, subtle whispers, as if heard from a distance, from your future, your best self calling back to you, reminding you to trust it, and not the loud, flashing lights, which blind you from this quieter, deeper truth: we are on the way… so let’s meet in the middle

It’s ironic that student and guru are somewhat similar… the only difference is the awareness or acceptance of that not knowing.

Because we don’t like not knowing…most people hate uncertainty… it’s painful… would rather tolerate the pain we know than open up to unknown levels and types pain we’ve yet to experience.

Yet, it’s also in this state that we can ever continue to learn… improve… master new skills… Much of this has to do with humility, and much more is realizing there’s just so so so much to know… the impossibility of full knowledge.

Reminder to myself to embrace the unknown… accept the pain of the unknown… let’s see what happens!

Be bold enough to change the world. Instead, most of us are held down by our fears… our questions… our perceptions… of the status quo being the absolute truth.

Yet, it’s the irrational dreamers who actually bring us closer to change. They envision new possibilities that the mainstream is blind to.

They know their “irrationality” is only a temporary state… that they can build the logic, build the tools, build the possibilities… step by step… stage by stage… to make that dream a reality.

It doesn’t happen over night. And it’ll seem foolish, or crazy, or delusional… until it isn’t. Of course, I think most of us will doubt our dreams. But that is because we haven’t taken the steps to work at it, for long enough.

So stay delusional, and let’s get back to work…

As I start to reflect on the past year and look towards the next, I want to remind myself to dream bigger.

Back when my parents immigrated from Hong Kong to New York, it really was a good-bye to everything they knew. Simple phone calls were expensive, letters were too infrequent, and international flights were such a luxury.

But that’s all obviously changed. So in someways, to live so distantly apart is a choice. We can work anywhere, call from anywhere and fly back many times a year.

This perception of a choice is what makes it even more painful and distorted. I’m not sure we fully understand this modern lifestyle… that it’s not a lifestyle but a life-arc… or life path.

One way, flowing in the tides of the times, pulling us gently away, while letting us feel close… away, away, away.

While love still holds us closer than we will ever logically or consciously know
