Since 2003, Atelier Inês Feliciano has specialised in the careful preservation, restoration and conservation of ceramic objects, glasses, azulejos (ceramic tiles) and archaeological artefacts from all periods and cultures.

What if identity could be read like a tile, with each fragment holding a code and each thread representing a genealogy?
For this project, Azulejos fragments are sourced from restoration sites, museum collections, conservation and restoration studios and research archives. They are then brought together through stitching to form a growing DNA structure.

Although the industrial production of ceramic tiles has led to significant technological and aesthetic advances, it has also presented new conservation challenges. In order to work with this heritage, it is crucial to understand the material composition and how it behaves. My PhD research aims to improve our knowledge in this area.

On June 24th, I presented my PhD research to my peers at the university. It was very rewarding to receive feedback and suggestions from other heritage conservation researchers. An excellent initiative by Departamento de Conservação e Restauro - FCT NOVA!
