Thank you for the conversations, the tears, and the laughter of the past few days.

I am proud of my growth as an artist. I see myself in all the models and in the work. What they show me is a reflection of who I am and who I am becoming.

I believe everything is political. My work centers people of color in a way that is non sexual, yet vulnerable and powerful. That visibility matters. At the same time, I was deeply moved by the impact on a personal level. Seeing people feel seen, touched, and emotional in front of the work reminded me why I do this.

Those moments fuel me. They inspire me to keep going on this artistic journey, whatever the outcome may be.

And special thanks to the for hosting this and the lovely people around me who I could share my thoughts, doubts, and vision with. The ones who guided me and held space throughout this process.

Watching these Cape Verdian women play drums and dance to the polyrhythms, chants and choir felt powerful and mesmerizing. It moved me deeply and felt like I was witnessing how my ancestors once came together to make music.

Batuku is the oldest musical tradition from Cape Verde, created by enslaved people. Today, there are six Batuku groups in Rotterdam and, instead of being rivals, they join forces and perform together. They play every Sunday in Rotterdam at Pier 80.

After the show, I approached the leader and asked if I could photograph them. Inspired by my favorite image ever, a photo by Gordon Parks, I created this portrait. To me the photo is about strength, female empowerment, resilience and spirituality.
