Healthcare. Cartão de Utente (User Card National Health Service)

Who can have it?: Foreign citizens residing in Portugal.

Where you can get it?: Medical centres (Centros de Saúde) or at Citizen’s Hall (Loja de Cidadão)

Conditions to get it: a) residence permit/ working visa in Portugal.
b) Certificate of residence, proving that you have lived in Portugal for more than 90 days.

What for?: to be able to:
- make an appointment in the Medical centres;
- book the medical exams;
- get medical prescriptions.

Let's talk about SEF!...

There is a constant confusion between immigrants when we are talking about SEF. In reality, it is very simple! Every Non-EU citizen has to deal with the SEF eventually, especially if you want to regulate your staying in Portugal 😉

In case, if you are EU citizen, you have to go to the City Hall (Camara Municipal), in order to obtain your residence in Portugal.

If you are an EU/EFTA citizen in Portugal for more than 90 days (three months), you will need to get a registration certificate from your local city council to formalise your residence in Portugal. Depends on your situation (employee, self-employed/pensioner/student) you will be required to provide different documents. The сosts of the document is 15 euros.

After 5 years of living in Portugal, you are officially eligible to apply for permanent citizenship.

Some useful info about Social Security number (Número de Identificação de Segurança Social)

Who can get it?: Everyone.

What are the conditions to get NISS?: You have to have NIF (Portuguese fiscal number) and proof of your activity: working contract (Contrato de Trabalho) or open working activity as an independent worker (Comprovativo de início de atividade).

What are the documents needed?: NIF, passport, two application forms* and, depends on your situation, either working contract or proof of working activity from the Finance Service (Finanças).

How long does it take?: Depends on your situation, it might take from 10 days and up to few months. It does really matter a lot on your situation.
