HISTORY
A year after the end of the Second World War, Erich Brodheim, a refugee of the horrors of war, decided – in the midst of the psychological, physical and material rubble – to roll up his sleeves and embrace the world.
With the wholehearted support of his wife, Miriam Brodheim, he decided to present the world with the Portuguese small traditional trade by representing high quality and prestigious “knickknacks and gadgets”.
Based on the fundamental principle of “Never eating more than he could chew”, Erich Brodheim earned the trust of his clients, suppliers and the banking sector.
Keeping up with the international accounts of the constant flow of new products, and using his ability to see and plan ahead, he became aware of the launch of the “zipper” in the French market. Through a few international contacts, he was able to import some “miles” of the product, which represented a revolution to all of the textile industry. That was the moment in which Erich Brodheim Lda. truly made his entrance into the fashion world.
By marketing this product, Erich Brodheim accomplishes three major feats that will definitely set the tone of his professional career:
– Being personally responsible for introducing the “zipper” in the Portuguese market;
– Making his first major business deal;
– Making his debut in the ready-to-wear retail market;
Recognising fashion as a potentially major business, he began his search for products to represent that would respond to the expectations of the Portuguese consumers, based on their prestige, quality and innovation.
As he dedicated himself to this new world, the “knickknacks and gadgets” sector gradually lost ground, with one exception: “the spectacles and sunglasses”, which managed to keep up with the revolution that was taking place in fashion, science and technology and went on from being knickknacks and gadgets to become fashion accessories.
Honesty, Youth, Tradition, Respect and Irreverence – Brodheim Group’s main values
In the 70′s the company presented itself as Erich Brodheim, Lda. – Fashion and Optics. The great difficulties to import in the post-revolution period, together with Erich Brodheim’s stubbornness and will to succeed, created an explosive situation for the company’s market image, since at that time it lived by the motto: “If we want internationally prestigious ready-to-wear fashion products in spite of the major restrictions, there is only one go-to supplier, since all others have abandoned the market: E.B.”.
Erich Brodheim’s death in 1980 coincided with a very troubled period for the company. Lack of competition in the sector aside, and because of the import restrictions and the serious economic and financial crisis the Portuguese market was in, the potential turnover was quite limited.
Portugal’s entrance in the Common Market in 1986 brought back to the company its dynamics, creativity and ability to plan ahead, which had been lying dormant due the circumstances of the decade.
And here begins the Brodheim Family’s second generation. Always respecting the moral values and business ethics of his Father and Founder, Ronald Brodheim, backed by his sister Valerie Brodheim, his mother Miriam Brodheim and his closest staff, diversifies his business activities and reorganises E.B., Lda. The business strategy is restructured through the creation of independent Divisions/Companies and by working ever more closely with its own Retail stores and single-brand chains.
Grounded on the strength and wisdom of a 65 year old history, and on the moral values and business ethics given by the sheer genius and humanity of its Founder from day one, the Brodheim Group today represents: Honesty, Youth, Tradition, Respect, Irreverence.
