Infrastructures of Portugal (IP) wins Environmental Sustainability Prize based on the new Reacted and Activated Rubber (RAR) Performance Based Specifications for road paving applications.

IP is the first road authority in the world to implement this new type of performance-based specification utilizing a newly developed type of asphalt paving mixture using reacted and activated rubber primarily consisting of recycled tire rubber material. For that they have been awarded the Environmental Sustainably Prize.
Although the concept of a performance-based specification using flexural fatigue laboratory testing is not new, it was proposed in 1993 during the last year of the USA Strategic Highway Research Program. Now 30 years later this is the first-time flexural fatigue tests are required during the mix design stage. By adding this requirement, it is now possible to demonstrate that the new mixes with reacted and activated rubber reach a fatigue performance standard that can be as much as 100 times higher than that of regular paving mixes (Illustration).
In addition to providing substantially increased fatigue cracking resistance these mixes also exhibit remarkable rutting and moisture damage quality attributes, which in total will lead to much reduced life cycle costs, thus saving money over the life of the pavement, and by means of using recycle tire rubber provide enormous environmental benefits.
