South-West Archaeology Digs (SWAD) is an archaeology field school running between May and September every year in the south of Portugal.

The Roman Republican occupation is the best-known chapter of Castelo Velho de Safara and our excavations are gradually revealing how this settlement was organised and how people lived here more than 2,000 years ago 🏺

🏘️ In Trenches 1 and 5, we have been uncovering the urban area. Trench 1 revealed a street alongside different working and storage spaces, including evidence of blacksmithing, while Trench 5 is taking us directly into the residential quarter, with several rooms and structures belonging to Roman Republican houses.

⛏️ In Trench 4, we excavated part of the impressive defensive ditch system that protected the settlement.

Between the prehistoric and Roman occupations at Castelo Velho de Safara, we also have evidence that people were living here during the Iron Age 🏺⏳

⛏️ So far, traces of this occupation have been identified in Trench 2 and in the test pit opened in the street area of Trench 1.

Before the Romans, Castelo Velho de Safara already had a story 🏺⏳

👑 Around 5,000 years ago, during the Chalcolithic (Copper Age), communities occupied the highest part of the site, around the rocky outcrop locally known as O Assento do Rei — “The King’s Seat”
