Yesterday, during a tour in the Douro region, a client (who is also a member of this group) asked me an interesting question:
"José, why don’t you post more often? You take great photos, and it’s clear that you enjoy writing!"
The answer is simple: besides being a tour guide, I am also a father, a husband, a son, a dog owner, a student, my own secretary, an accountant... and a million other things! 😅
Just imagine a day like today:
If I'm at the hotel entrance by 8:30 AM, my day starts at 5:30 AM. I take the dog for a walk, shower, get everything ready for the day, and make sure my wife has a fresh pot of coffee waiting. Then I spend a few minutes checking my schedule and reviewing my notes before heading out early to avoid delays.
Next comes the best part: the tour itself. As everyone who travels with me knows, I don’t work by the clock; instead, I focus on giving my clients a relaxing, authentic, comprehensive experience tailor-made for them. This means I often don’t get home until after 10:00 PM.
Once I arrive home, I whip up a quick bite and sit down at the table with my wife and son for a precious moment to hear about their day and unwind. After dinner, while my wife takes care of some household chores, I clean and prepare the car so that it’s in pristine condition for the following day.
After all that, I finally sit down on the sofa to spend some quality time with my wife (something I make a point of doing every single day!). Once she heads off to bed, I move to my computer: I check emails, put together personalized itineraries for Portugal, chat with clients, and handle invoices. Finally, around 1:00 or 2:00 AM, I manage to get my 3 to 4 hours of sleep.
At the end of last month, my wife asked me, with a laugh: "Do you know how many hours you actually spent at home this month? 32."
That's why I don’t post as often as I’d like or as frequently as social media algorithms recommend!
I want to take a moment to pay tribute to all the tour guides who, day in and day out, welcome visitors to our country with a genuine smile, no matter what personal challenges or exhaustion they may be feeling. Being a tour guide isn’t just a job; it’s a true passion.
