The Algarve’s w**e story goes back centuries.

In 1873, the region produced around 2.8 million litres of w**e, with Tavira alone accounting for more than 325,000 litres.

Just a year later, Algarve w**es were presented at the 1874 International W**e Exhibition in London, where w**es from the region received international recognition.

Nearly 150 years later, a new generation of producers is bringing attention back to this historic w**e region.

Algarve w**e isn’t something new. It’s a tradition being rediscovered.

SOULFUL ATLANTIC WHITE

Vida Vinha’s Fonte Salgada white (€36) is the sort of w**e that feels like uncovering a secret. Produced in tiny quantities in the hills above Tavira by a Danish couple, with guidance from w**emaker Dinis Gonçalves, it tastes as handcrafted as its story suggests.
Arinto leads with zesty citrus and mouthwatering freshness, softened by a touch of Antão Vaz, whilst a subtle saline note hints at the nearby Atlantic.
Beneath, a chalky, schist-driven minerality adds finesse and length.
Foot-trodden, slowly fermented and aged in French oak on fine lees, it’s a precise, soulful white that captures the Algarve’s coastal light in the glass.

— FAVORITE W**E OF THE WEEK —

Negra Mole is apparently not the same grape as the one known from Madeira, where it gently bubbles along as an unfortified red w**e after a life as a base grape for much of the island’s fortified w**e. Algarve’s Negra Mole, however, also has the ability to retain low alcohol in a super-hot climate.

Negra Mole is an old variety. Light red and transparent, with aromas of goji berries, barberries and bitter roots reminiscent of those used in vermouth production — and, as you know, I like that. A moderate 12.5% alcohol and driven by juiciness, though note the bitter character that creeps into the palate midway and remains through the finish. I’m guessing whole-cluster fermentation to preserve this lovely freshness.

Arinto with a small splash of Antão Vaz, foot-trodden to allow a touch of skin maceration and aged in used oak barrels. New-style or old-style Portuguese white w**e, depending on your perspective—fashionably modern and deeply traditional at the same time.

Golden in colour, with honey on the nose intertw**ed with notes of pollen and hops from the skin contact. Aromas of dried apricot and fired clay mingle with dandelion syrup and sweet yellow apples. At just 11.5% alcohol, it also carries the brighter acidity that comes from an earlier harvest than is typical for Arinto. Refreshing yet full of character, with a distinctly salty finish—how is that possible?
