Once a convent and later part of Tavira’s industrial history, Convento das Bernardas has lived many lives over the centuries.

Its remarkable rehabilitation by Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura brought those different layers together, preserving the character and history of the building while giving it a new purpose.

The project was recognised internationally, receiving the 2017 European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention — a celebration of the sensitive transformation of this extraordinary place.

Today, behind its historic walls, Convento das Bernardas offers a unique setting in Tavira, where centuries of history meet contemporary architecture and everyday life.

Winter in Tavira ☀️

Thinking about spending the quieter months in the Algarve?
