Are processed through AIMA.

Regulations evolve. Procedures update. Appointment availability can change.

Being informed makes all the difference.

📌 Reminder for Expats: What is AIMA?

If you are living in Portugal — or planning to move — this is important.

AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) is the authority responsible for managing immigration in Portugal.

That means:
• Residence permits
• Renewals
• Family reunif**ation
• Biometric appointments
• Immigration status changes

If your residency process is pending, scheduled, or under review — it is handled by AIMA.

Understanding who manages your legal stay helps you stay prepared and informed.

At Maria’s Expat Services we guide you through every stage of the process.

Palavra do Dia: “Fica para amanhã” ⏳😄

Meaning: Let’s leave it for tomorrow
Literal: “It stays for tomorrow”

Example:
“Já é sexta-feira… f**a para amanhã.”
(“It’s already Friday… let’s leave it for tomorrow.”)

😄 Expat Insight:
Sometimes this phrase is practical… sometimes it’s optimistic 😅 Many expats hear this during paperwork processes. Patience is part of the Portuguese experience!

Palavra do Dia: “Santa Paciência!” 🙏😅

Meaning: Oh dear… / For heaven’s sake… / Give me strength!
Literal: “Holy patience”

Example:
“Outra vez o sistema está em baixo? Santa paciência!”
(“The system is down again? For heaven’s sake!”)

😄 Expat Insight:
You’ll hear this when someone is mildly frustrated but trying to stay calm. It’s dramatic — but in a very Portuguese way.

Perfect for long queues, delayed appointments, or paperwork that “just needs one more document” 😅

Palavra do Dia: “Pois é” 🤷‍♂️🇵🇹

Meaning: It is what it is / That’s right / Exactly / Well… yeah
Literal: “Well, it is”

Example:
“Os prazos mudaram outra vez.”
“Pois é…”
(“The deadlines changed again.”
“Yeah… it is what it is.”)

😄 Expat Insight:
“Pois é” is pure Portuguese acceptance. It can show agreement, resignation, mild frustration, or simple acknowledgment.

You’ll often hear it during bureaucratic conversations — usually followed by a small sigh 😅

📄 Family Reunif**ation in Portugal — Preparation is everything.

Already confirmed eligibility?

Step 2️⃣ — What you need

To submit your request, authorities will require:

• Your valid residence permit
• Proof of adequate accommodation in Portugal
• Proof of sufficient financial means
• Marriage and/or birth certif**ates
• Legalised and translated documents (when applicable)

Incomplete documentation is one of the main causes of delays.

Careful preparation makes the process smoother and faster.

Palavra do Dia: “Tira o cavalinho da chuva” 🐴🌧️

Meaning: Forget about it / Don’t get your hopes up
Literal: “Take your little horse out of the rain”

Example:
“Tira o cavalinho da chuva se achas que o processo vai f**ar pronto hoje.”
(“Forget it if you think the process will be finished today.”)

😄 Expat Insight:
You’ll hear this a LOT in Portugal — especially when dealing with bureaucracy, schedules, or optimistic timelines. It’s usually said with a smile… but the message is clear 😅
