Why Post Weld Heat Treatment Is Used
Welding creates a steep temperature difference between the molten weld area and the surrounding base metal. As the weld cools and contracts, it can leave residual tensile stresses in and around the joint. These stresses may not be visible, but they can contribute to distortion, brittle behavior, stress corrosion cracking, fatigue concerns, or reduced performance under pressure and temperature cycling.
PWHT commonly relieves residual stress and tempers hardened areas in applicable carbon steels and low-alloy steels. It can improve ductility and toughness characteristics, lower hardness where required, and provide a more stable condition for equipment entering severe process service. Typical applications include pressure vessels, boilers, steam lines, refinery piping, structural weldments, offshore assemblies, heavy fabricated components, and repairs to process equipment.
The benefit depends on the alloy and the approved welding procedure. Heat treatment is not a universal correction for a poor weld, incorrect filler metal, lack of fusion, or unacceptable weld geometry. It should support a qualified
fabrication process, not replace one.
