Kind words from our mentors. We were not even aware of what our experiments were usefull for at that time, but we knew it was important 🫡

Zilele acestea, împreună cu partenerii noștri de la Wilderness Research and Consultancy , am reușit o astfel de victorie discretă: includerea liliecilor în etapele de monitorizare ale proiectelor de energie eoliană offshore din Marea Neagră.

Un detaliu care putea fi trecut cu vederea.
Un impact real care putea rămâne invizibil.

Și totuși… pentru noi, povestea începe cu mult înainte.

Ne întoarcem în 2016, la bordul navei Ocean Spirit, când am instalat pentru prima dată un detector de lilieci offshore. Timp de 3 luni, dispozitivul a înregistrat date care confirmau ceva ce părea improbabil:
🦇 liliecii migrează și deasupra mării, la distanțe considerabile de țărm.

În imagine: Zaher Bin Zakaria (Răzvan Zaharia) și Dragos Stefan Mantoiu, într-unul dintre acele momente de început.

Au trecut aproape 10 ani de atunci.
10 ani de observații, argumente, răbdare și construcție tăcută.

Astăzi, aceste date contribuie direct la decizii reale.
Pentru că știința are nevoie de timp.
Dar și de perseverență.

🌊 Pentru un viitor mai curat — pentru oameni și pentru viața sălbatică.

A huge win today for science and conservation biology.

The Maritime Spatial Plan of the Black Sea - Romanian sector, comissionned by the Ministerul Energiei - România and developed by and for offshore wind energy was lacking a key critical component. The fact that bats migrate on the sea.
During our biodiversity expeditions with S.E.O.P.M.M. Oceanic-Club in the oil and gas sector, we observed the presence of these animals at long distances offshore. If left unnatented, these projects may have potential negative impact on these animals, especially in migratory pathways.

Our team is a member of the offshore wind energy guideline, leading the chapter on martime spatial planning. Using the draft version of our guideline, we managed to argue the case, and now bats have been included in the monitoring stages for the EIA.

We would like to thank the authorities for being open to the biological facts, BVG for understanding the need and for hosting such a fine event.

This was 10 years in the making, for a cleaner and better future for humans and animals alike
