Jim Henry was pulled out of third grade to help support his family.

He never learned to read. He spent decades as a lobsterman riding 90-foot waves, losing loved ones, living a full life; all while hiding his illiteracy from the world.

Then, in his mid-90s, he decided enough was enough.
He took reading lessons. He practiced writing. And at 98 years old, he published a book called In a Fisherman’s Language.
ā€œIt’s a big, big, big, big lie,ā€ he said about the idea that it’s ever too late to learn. ā€œI’m so happy, I catch myself crying. It’s like I’m born again.ā€

A debut author. Born again.

Whatever we’ve been telling ourselves is ā€œtoo lateā€, I think Jim has something to say about that.

1) Prague, June 2009.
I was there for several days spread across multiple visits, facilitating a SAP transition: the migration of accounting services from Prague to Bucharest.
I spent most of the time inside BAT offices and the hotel.
The city was right there, though I did not enjoy it fully.

2) Prague, April 2026.
Matthew finished Dan Brown’s novel set in Prague and said: I want to see this city.
So we went. For him. And somewhere in the middle of it, also for me.
The day before we left, we sat in NĆ”městĆ MĆru in front of the Church of St. Ludmila, surrounded by lilac and tulips in full bloom. He said: this is the kind of thing you miss when you’re always in a hurry…

I had been to Prague before. I just hadn’t embraced it fully.

šŸ’”I’m curious: What are you currently standing next to without actually being present for?

P.S.: we want to return to Pragueā˜ŗļø

Part 5 of The Color Between Steps is live on Substack.

This one is written from New Canaan from inside the next chapter.
It starts with a celebrity stylist (thank you ) who speaks about clothes the way I speak about metamorphosis. It ends with a name I have been waiting to say out loud.

And somewhere in the middle, there is a room in Bucharest from four years ago that supported everything.
If you have seen appearing in my posts and wondered what it meant, this letter is the beginning of the answer.

Link in bio. I would love to know what stays with you after you read it šŸ«¶šŸ¼šŸ¦‹

Some events feel like they were meant to happen.
I only discovered recently through following . Then I spotted her name in the New Canaan Library newsletter while still in Bucharest and we returned to US just in time to attend the eventšŸ˜‡
Erin is a celebrity stylist with a gift for helping people return to themselves through the way they dress. Her framework is called CREATE (Clarity Ā· Rituals Ā· Editing Ā· Alignment Ā· Truth Ā· Expansion).

I love acronyms 😊 So, here’s how I would describe Erin through my own lens after yesterday encounter:
š—– — Courage
š—„ — Radiance
š—˜ — Empathy
š—” — Authenticity
š—§ — Trust
š—˜ — Essentialism

I look forward to reading Erin’s book and I feel grateful I discovered both her and through this unexpected chain of events. Thank you, Anne! šŸ˜‡šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Today would have been Audrey Hepburn’s birthdayšŸ¤

She is the reason my second book (a journal) exists.

Audrey moved through the world with:
Vulnerability. Uniqueness. Courage. Authenticity.

VUCA² before there was a name for it.

I’ve been fascinated by her for years. And at some point I stopped just admiring her and started asking: what if her words could be a daily mirror? A 45-day journey of introspection, where Audrey’s gently profound insights meet your own?

That’s how ā€œReach for Your Starsā€ was born.

Every May 4, I’m thinking of her, feeling grateful for everything she still teaches us, and sending so much love to every reader who has picked up this journal and dared to look inside.

Happy heavenly birthday, Audrey! Your Star shines foreverā¤ļøšŸ¦‹

In July 2020, during the pandemic, I sat down to prepare a webinar for Professional Women’s Network Romania. I was looking for a title.

What arrived, with the quiet certainty of something that had always been true yet never spoken: VUCA².
Vulnerability. Uniqueness. Courage. Authenticity.

The same letters as VUCA: the volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous world I had navigated for 20 years in boardrooms across three continents.

A second generation. One for managing organisations through change. One for managing yourself through it.

I had been living this methodology for years without knowing that was what I was doing.

The corporate change strategist and the woman rebuilding her own life weren’t two different people applying two different frameworks.

They were the same person using the same framework.

Part 4 of The Color Between Steps is live today. Link in bio.

The question worth sitting with through the weekend (and beyond):

What have you already learned that you haven’t yet applied somewhere else in your life?

In 1976, Nadia Comăneci scored the first Perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history.
The scoreboard wasn’t built to show it. It displayed 1.00 because a 10 was considered impossible.
I found this certificate these days while going through old papers.

November 2012. A corporate award for performing beyond expectations to a very high standard.
I left that world 4 years later. Not because I couldn’t perform. Because I finally asked what I was performing for.
That question changed everything.

šŸ”“ What’s the score you’re still chasing and does it belong to you, or to someone else’s scoreboard?
🟢 What’s your Perfect 10 moment and what did you do with it?

Do not ignore these questions as they might reveal something unexpected.

I love places with a soul, and that's exactly what we discovered over an amazing coffee at

The owner, who is Mexican, recreated a little piece of his country right by the Marbella promenade. Every detail had its own place, its own meaning.
The coffee was made on a La Marzocco machine šŸ˜‡ We also had some tasty beef tacos and the house french toast with churritos šŸŒž

Mi Casa Tu Casa is a lesson in personal branding. If you're ever in Marbella, go visit, you won't regret it.
P.S. We actually enjoyed Marbella more than Malaga, though we know our traveller profile is a little different from most people's 😊

The uniqueness of a brand just like the one of a place resides in the story is shared. If you're building your brand and want support through coaching, consulting, or a talk that sparks real change, follow along and let's connect šŸ¤

The last few months felt like a metamorphosis.
The transition to perimenopausal years came with challenges and new lessons… Courage, trust, patience, the love from my family and some very special friends are my anchorsā¤ļøšŸ¦‹ And yes, I started HRT toošŸ™ŒšŸ¼

I don’t believe it was a coincidence that 3 days afterI turned 47, we visited an enchanting place where hundreds of butterflies blessed us. I told to my loving man that I was surrounded by my šŸ¦‹family

So, here I am at 47 with more wrinkles, yet being blessed by butterflies, Sun, Sea in AndalucĆa.
Once again, I was reminded why I am in love with Spain since 2000ā¤ļøšŸŒž(you can read about my first trip to Spain here: https://open.substack.com/pub/gabrielablaga/p/a-spanish-spring-how-five-months?r=ircz7&utm_medium=ios)
