Good design never ends. 🌱

Interface is a 2026 finalist for the Reuters’ Global Sustainability Awards, for its work on developing a circular operating model. The journey started more than 30 years ago, back in 1994, when sustainability was barely part of the conversation.

👀 Today, circularity means choosing lower carbon materials, making products that last longer and planning what comes next, so materials can stay in use instead of ending up as waste. And by 2040, their commitment is to reach a negative carbon footprint.

But the quick catch-up before the meeting or the spontaneous handshake on the hallway with a coleague are small interactions that play a big part in having a sense of community and belonging - the most important aspects in employee retention.

Only 19% of people actually prefer taking video calls at their desks. For everyone else, it may simply be the easiest option when meeting rooms are insufficient, outdated, difficult to book or offer no clear view of real-time availability.

The solution isn't to get rid of technology, but to make connection the convenient choice. That means providing enough meeting spaces for the way people actually work and making them easy to find, book and use.

Thinking about adding pods to your workplace? They can give people privacy for a call, focused work or a small meeting, but their placement and setup will determine how well they work within the wider office.

Still, there are a few things worth considering before you decide where the pods go.

👉 Place them where people can easily find and use them, while considering what type of work happens around them. A quieter area can work well for focused tasks, while spaces near collaborative areas may be better suited for meetings and conversations.

👉 Offer different sizes. A phone call, focused work and a four person meeting require different types of spaces.

👉 Choose the right setup. Select furniture that supports the activities the space is designed for. You can also personalise finishes, colours and materials so the space fits naturally into the wider workplace.

August is usually the month when everyone’s mind drifts toward vacation. While not every workday can be spent by the sea, stepping outside for even ten minutes has a direct, proven effect on focus and mental clarity. 💨

Research shows that even a short break outdoors can help clear your mind, reduce mental fatigue, and make it easier to focus when you get back to work. So, fresh air, natural light, and a change of scenery help people feel better and work better.

🌿 We see this in practice on the terraces designed for our clients in Cluj (Darwin & Rebel Dot), which quickly became the busiest spots in the office during the summer. Whether it's a quick coffee break, an informal meeting, or a few quiet minutes between tasks, stepping outdoors brings just the right reset to keep the day moving forward.

New research from Steelcase shows that one of the biggest barriers to a better workplace experience is the lack of privacy. As video calls become part of the everyday routine and open plan offices get busier, people need places where they can focus, have confidential conversations or simply take a break without leaving the office floor.

Addressing this doesn't mean building endless solid walls. One textbook example is our client, Bayer, where a layered privacy approach was implemented based on how people actually work throughout the day.

1️⃣ Visual privacy was added to the open-plan areas through functional elements such as tall storage units and integrated planters. These help reduce visual distractions while keeping the space open and connected.

2️⃣ Then, semi-enclosed settings were introduced for focused individual work, giving employees a quieter place to step away from busy circulation areas without feeling isolated from their teams.

3️⃣ Finally, for confidential calls, private conversations and deep-focus work, fully enclosed spaces were integrated. These offer complete acoustic isolation when needed.

💻 When people sit still for hours, energy drops and focus fades. The new Steelcase Flex Rocker Stool brings natural movement back into the workday with a subtle rocking motion that lets you shift postures freely while you work or talk.

It was designed for those parts of the office where work moves quickly and layouts rarely stay the same, like project rooms, workcafes, and workshop zones. Because it’s lightweight and stackable, teams can pull a few stools together for a spontaneous huddle or stack them out of the way when the room needs to open up. That makes it easy for people to join a discussion, switch positions or move between groups without disrupting the flow of the conversation.

🪑 There’s a practical side to its design, too. Instead of replacing the entire stool when the fabric starts to wear, the seat upholstery can be unclipped and replaced, making it easy to refresh the product and extend its lifespan.

🙌 Our latest project for OLX comes after nearly a decade since our collaboration began, in 2016. As their team grew, the company expanded its Bucharest America House workplace by 750 sqm. At the same time, the existing office was refurbished, bringing the total space to 1,500 sqm.

Developed by our in-house design team, the concept applies Steelcase's Community-Based Design approach, inspired by the way cities bring people together. Just as neighbourhoods, streets and public squares support different types of activity, the office is organised into interconnected spaces that encourage collaboration, focused work and informal interaction.

At the centre of the layout sits a multifunctional hub. Mobile glass partitions and reconfigurable furniture allow it to function as a cafeteria, collaboration space or event venue, depending on the day's needs. The surrounding open work areas support day-to-day collaboration. Meeting rooms provide dedicated spaces for focused time and privacy. Inspired by OLX's Romanian heritage, each one is themed around a national landmark, drawing on cultural references such as Viscri village, Voroneț Monastery and Constantin Brâncuși's The Infinite Column to add a local layer of identity to the workplace. Dedicated wellbeing spaces, including a game room and a relaxation room, offer employees places to step away from the desk.
