Pioneer CT 757 adapted to Yamaha GF32 Head

After lots of searching i have found no replacements available and the Yamaha GF32 beeing more widely available i decided to modify this deck to adapt the head to it.
First, it was mechanically incompatible, the GF32 having a 2 screw mounting plate, so i took the mounting plate from the original head and adapted it to the GF32.
After that, the PB preamp needed work in order to achieve flat response.
Measuring the FR on REC, there s little difference compared to a well working 757 but at 0dB big improvements were seen, achieving 12/12.5kHz compared to the stock head's 9/10kHz. This translates into a cleaner HF response with less distortion especially at higher REC Levels

#0111 TEAC V-5010 Restoration

Previously bought by the client as a allready restored unit but it was far from it.

Capstan motor was replaced with a CW one and an additional board was thrown in to reverse it.
Contact raising mechanism wasn't working properly because of improper reassembly + there were some missing screws.

The following was done:

- Full mechanism relube (including all sintered bearings)
- Locating missing screws from donor mechanism
- Replacement of all rubber (belts/rollers)
- Replacement of capstan motor with a proper one
- Cleaning of all contacts/potentiometers
- Realignment of tape path with WHS300
- Replacement of microswitches
- Full electronical realignment

Weeks turned into months but i am back!😄

I have completed my new restoration setup strictly dedicated for magnetic tape medium (for now, mainly cassette decks).

There will also be photos of my first ever setup when i started fixing cassette decks in 2022 with the bare minimum of tools (and i really mean bare minimum).

The new youtube video format is also finished and it includes measurement data from the cassette deck presented after it's been restored at the beginning of the video.

Now a bit of a back story of where it all started:
It all started when i was 16 and bought my first ever cassette deck allegedly "serviced", only then to find out most "serviced/restored" decks sold really mean "i swapped the belts and it outputs sound now".

The deck didn't quite work right as the the sound was "wobbly" and the real time counter stopped working
I opened it up with no past experience on decks or frankly any other analogue device and had noticed the backtension belt was melted onto the reflective strips (someone didn't bother replacing that :/) and the capstan belt was hugely inconsistent thickness wise.
Swapped everything out with new belts and everything worked right again. Except it wasn't so easy as i had lost the retaining clip of one reel and it took an additional 4 hours of moving couches to find it 😂
I had eventually sold the deck and the person i sold it to called me weeks later and told me i should start restoring tape decks.
It all started there, first on the coffe table, then on a slightly bigger one, then two.. then more and more tools, reasearch about what lubricants to use, wich belts and rollers are the best, restoration of motors with deadspots, modifications, frankenstein mechanisms,
externally adjustable per channel bias/level with custom PCB's, replacement of 4066 chips and much more.

Posts on Facebook and YouTube will stop for a few weeks as i am working on a new video and post format that is lighter and provides more usefull info.

Videos on YouTube will be shorter but of higher quality content wise, including graphs and measurements at the beginning of the video.

Posts on facebook will contain less photos but of higher quality and from parts of the restoration that actually matter the most.

#0096 Technics RS-M95 Cassette Deck

Brought in because it would stop in play mode but it had multiple problems after fixing the obvious. Unit was fully recapped before getting to me.
I continued the restoration with a mechanical rebuild and replaced all wearables + a full realignment was done.

#0095 Sony TC-KA5ES Cassette Deck

Loud noise from headphone jack was the main issue with this one but after fixing the obvious i also noticed the belts were nearly done so a full overhaul was needed.

To fix the headphone jack noise problem, the headphone pot. needed to have a access hole created in order to clean it and after that, the mechanism was fully restored:
new belts, new rollers, fully regreased and relubed, all motors dismantled and cleaned + lubed, all contacts cleaned, tapepath realigned and a full readjustment of the electronics.

#0097 Nakamichi BX-300 Cassette Deck

Deck was brought in for service because it wouldn't fast forward nor rewind and sometimes stop on play.
After tearing down the mechanism i noticed both the idler and idler holder were damaged and it looked like someone tried replacing the idler and failed. Besides that i also replaced all belts, cleaned motors + lubed all bearings, cleaned contacts, replaced rollers, greased mechanism and realigned all heads and guides before realigning the electronics completely aswell.

You can hear the results in this video, with direct sound:

#0089 Akai GX 75 Cassette Deck

Received with a seized mechanism barely beeing able to open the door i proceeded with a full overhaul.

All belts/idlers/rollers were replaced, whole mechanism was regreased, all bearings lubed, new reel motor, contacts cleaned and a full realignment.

A stable W/F of 0.027% WRMS was obtained and surprisingly the heads were fine and measured 0.68% Lch and 0.70%Rch THD. Frequency response was also excellent reaching 25kHz on metal tape at -20 from 160nWb/m, 21kHz on ferric and 22kHz on chrome

#0091 Technics RS B965 Cassette Deck

Deck was improperly working and never restored so i proceeded with a full mechanical overhaul

Mechanism was fully regreased, all contacts cleaned, belts replaced, pinchrollers replaced and all alignments made again

The deck showed impressive performance measuring a w/f of 0.029% WRMS, a perfectly equal THD value between channels and reaching 22kHz on metal tape.

#0085 TEAC V-1RX Cassette Deck

The deck was improperly working upon receiving it. The idlers appeared to have been changed for ORings and were slipping.

I have done a total overhaul on the mechanism:
New belt, roller, idlers, regreased everything, oiled capstan bearing, dismantled motors for cleaning/oiling, cleaned all contacts, aligned erase head guide, fixed the door damper and carried on to the front panel where i also cleaned all contacts/pots. Finishing up i put everything back toghether and realigned everything.
