Autumn changes how we plan our field days.

Cold batteries lose flight time, so we warm them before take-off. Gusts become more frequent, and wind at working altitude is often stronger than on the ground, so we measure it at the height we will actually fly. After the clocks go back at the end of October, it gets dark an hour earlier.

That shortens the flying window and means earlier starts on site. If you are planning autumn work, it helps to allow a little flexibility on dates.

Gas consumption starts to climb in October, and a leak on the network matters more once the heating season begins.

That is why we schedule aerial surveys of gas routes in early autumn.

Flying the route with a gas detection sensor lets us cover long stretches of pipeline in a day, including sections across fields or private land that are slow to walk. Maintenance crews receive a list of points to check, each with its coordinates. They can plan the repairs before demand peaks, while the weather still allows work on site.

Zilele trecute am fost la Budapesta, la SPH Drone Camp, și ne-am întors cu telefonul plin de poze și caietul plin de notițe.

Două zile în care am văzut tot lanțul unei operațiuni cu drone, în teren: de la planificarea misiunii, la senzori, până la datele procesate. Pentru noi, care lucrăm zilnic cu echipamentele pe care le integrăm, a contat mult să vedem cm se comportă în condiții reale și să punem întrebări direct oamenilor care le construiesc.

Și, ca la orice eveniment bun, o parte importantă s-a petrecut între sesiuni. Am stat de vorbă cu operatori din alte țări, care se lovesc de aceleași probleme ca noi pe alte tipuri de proiecte, și ne-am întors cu câteva idei pe care abia așteptăm să le testăm.

Mulțumim echipei Engineering pentru organizare, pentru deschidere și pentru atmosfera în care s-a putut vorbi liber despre ce funcționează și ce nu.

Felicitări tuturor câștigătorilor Global Drone Operations Award, proiectele lor au ridicat ștacheta pentru toată industria.

October, 13th is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, and for water infrastructure the timing fits, with the autumn rains still ahead.

A drone survey of dams, retention basins and riverbanks shows settlement and seepage along embankments, changes in slopes and water levels, and early signs of erosion or slides on the banks.

Autumn is a good season for power line inspections.

Once the leaves drop, poles and conductors hidden by vegetation all summer are visible again.

Defects found now can be fixed before the winter load peaks. We capture LiDAR and imagery in a single pass, either from the drone or from our vehicle-mounted scanner along roads. One dataset then shows vegetation clearance, conductor sag and leaning poles, ready for the operator's maintenance plan.

What is a point cloud?

From a distance, a LiDAR point cloud looks like a finished 3D model.

Up close, you can see it is made of individual measurements. The scanner sends out hundreds of thousands of laser pulses every second and times how long each one takes to come back, while GNSS and the IMU place every return on the map with its own X, Y and Z. A single pulse can bounce off leaves, branches and the ground in turn, so LiDAR also reaches the terrain under tree cover.

That is why we use it on corridors, earthworks and vegetated sites. Colour is added later, during processing, usually by height or from the camera imagery.

The flight itself is usually the shortest part of the day. Everything that makes it work happens before the drone ever leaves the ground.

There's the site to walk first: where to launch and land, what's overhead, where people will be standing. The airspace to check. The weather read for the day, not the forecast from yesterday. The aircraft itself, gone over piece by piece. A flight plan shaped around what the data actually needs, not just what's easy to fly.

None of it is glamorous, and none of it makes the highlight reel. But it's the difference between a clean, repeatable inspection and a flight you're improvising halfway through.

By the time the props spin up, the interesting decisions are already made. The take-off is just where the preparation becomes visible.

Ground penetrating radar works on a beautifully simple idea: send a pulse of radio energy into the ground and listen for what bounces back.

Whenever the pulse hits something different part of it bounces back. A quick echo means something shallow, a slow one means something deep. Move the antenna along a line and those echoes build the profile you see here.

The catch: the vertical axis isn't depth, it's time. And how fast the signal travels depends on the ground, fast through dry sand, slow through wet clay. That's why GPR depths come with a margin, not an exact number. The same ground also decides how deep you can see: dry sand, gravel and concrete let the signal reach far; wet clay, salty soil and rebar cut it short.

La Orizont UAV, în parteneriat cu Universitatea Politehnica Timișoara, dezvoltă în prezent un proiect de formare profesională finanțat prin Programul Educație și Ocupare 2021–2027, apelul STEP-LLL adulți. Dacă proiectul este aprobat, programele de formare vor fi gratuite pentru participanți și vor acoperi mai multe niveluri de specializare.

Printre programele vizate se numără calificarea de Pilot de dronă (COR 315318), cu diplomă recunoscută de Ministerul Muncii, cursuri avansate de inspecție aeriană cu sisteme UAS pentru rețele electrice și parcuri fotovoltaice, incluzând scanare LiDAR, termografie și fotogrametrie, cursuri pentru operarea în categoria Specific (STS-01, STS-02), finalizate cu certificat emis de AACR, și un curs de aprofundare în sisteme autonome de navigație și control UAS, finalizat cu diplomă UPT.

Powerline faults come in two kinds.

Some you can simply see: a shattered insulator, a bird's nest, a strand lifting off a conductor. A sharp visible camera picks them up straight away.

Others give nothing away to the eye. A loose clamp, an overloaded joint, a connection going bad. The hardware looks fine right up until it fails. What gives them away is heat, and heat so the sensors split the work: the visible camera shows what the line looks like, the thermal one shows how it's behaving under load.
