WHY ARE VIETNAMESE GINGER AND TURMERIC SOUGHT AFTER AT HIGH PRICES IN INDIA?
The first 6 months of the year recorded ginger, turmeric and other spice exports reaching 17,280 tons with a turnover of 33 million USD, an increase of 5.1% in value over the same period last year.
Statistics recently released by the Vietnam Pepper Association show that ginger, turmeric and other spice exports in the first 2 quarters of the year reached 17,280 tons with a turnover of 33 million USD.
The main export markets for Vietnamese ginger and turmeric include India with 6,635 tons, accounting for 38.4%, Bangladesh with 3,561 tons, accounting for 20.6%, Indonesia with 1,396 tons, accounting for 8.1%.
Vietnam is ranked 3rd in the world in supplying and processing spices after India and China, the entire Vietnamese spice industry has 14 factories with deep processing technology.
Of which, ginger, turmeric and some other spices alone exported 34,976 tons with an export value of 49.3 million USD, a sharp increase of 222.4% compared to 2022.
In particular, for ginger, a familiar and popular item for Vietnamese people, but when exported abroad, ginger is very sought after, favored and priced.
Vietnamese ginger is often exported in frozen form, in addition, processed Vietnamese ginger is also consumed quite strongly, often used as a spice and used to support the digestive system, reduce nausea, help fight flu and common colds.
In particular, ginger jam is a very popular product in cold countries. In addition to its delicious and aromatic quality, Vietnamese ginger is also cheaper than domestic products in other countries.
Currently, China is the largest importer of this group of products from Vietnam with 10,271 tons, a sharp increase of 437% over the same period.
Bangladesh was the second market with 6,585 tons, a sharp increase of 100%. India ranked third with 4,394 tons, an increase of 50% and Laos reached 2,927 tons, an increase of 2,401%.
