King Abdullah City For Atomic And Renewable Energy: Redefining Urban Sustainability and Architectural Innovation for a Net-Zero Future
Positioned as a national catalyst for transformation, the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) is set within the striking landscape of the Towaiq Uplands, west of Riyadh. The masterplan responds to the site’s wadis and plateaus, embedding the city within its natural context while aligning with Saudi Arabia’s ambitions for clean energy leadership and sustainable urban growth.
KA-CARE is envisioned as an integrated, knowledge-driven city that unites research, academia, industry, and community life. A contemporary interpretation of the urban grid organizes walkable, mixed-use districts that encourage connectivity and social interaction. Climate-responsive architectural typologies and shaded public realms enhance environmental performance while supporting a high quality of life.
Guided by a net-zero carbon vision, the city operates as a living laboratory for renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. KA-CARE sets a benchmark for future-ready urbanism in the Kingdom, where innovation, resilience, and design excellence converge to shape a more sustainable and diversified future.

[Meet the Team] With more than thirty years of experience across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, Dahl, Senior Landscape Architect at Omrania, brings a deep sensitivity to how history and climate shape contemporary landscapes.

In this interview, Simon reflects on lessons from vernacular traditions: from the wind catchers of Iran to the shaded streets of Saudi Arabia, and how such wisdom guides his modern approach to place-making. He discusses how every site offers its own “sweet spot,” where context, constraints, and use converge, and why designing for people, especially the young and the old, remains central to his philosophy.

The conversation highlights Simon’s belief that meaningful landscapes are not about style or imagery, but about endurance, adaptability, and respect for local culture and ecology.

Within Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, the Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence embodies a dialogue between architectural precision and contemporary elegance. The interiors translate the building’s linear rhythm into a refined spatial composition of balance, depth, and movement. Clean lines, layered patterns, and rich textures merge to create a sense of continuity between exterior and interior. An organic palette of earthy tones, pearl whites, and warm greys is elevated by accents of violet, fuchsia, and apple yellow, introducing vibrancy while maintaining compositional harmony. Every crafted detail, from natural wood accents to rattan lanterns and porcelain sculptures, reflects Omrania’s pursuit of modern sophistication.

[Meet the Team] Teaching Space: How Anna Rita’s Academic Pedagogy Lives On in Her Practice

What happens when decades of architectural history teaching meet the scale and speed of Saudi Arabia’s built‑environment transformation? In this interview, Anna Rita Petrungaro, Associate Interior Design Director at Omrania, shares how her academic roots, shaped by thinkers like Louis Kahn, Gaston Bachelard, and Peter Zumthor- quietly underpin a deeply human, context‑driven approach to interior architecture. From the “poetics of space” in museum interiors to the ethical clarity of served and servant spaces, theory becomes tangible through light, material, and the careful sequencing of lived moments.

As the Kingdom’s interior‑architecture culture evolves, Anna Rita also reflects on how interiors can balance ambition with authenticity, addressing climate, culture, and wellbeing without sacrificing elegance or legibility. Her perspective offers a compelling glimpse into how an “academic mindset” fosters interiors that are not only beautiful but meaningful, inclusive, and enduring.

[Case Study] Secure Government Headquarters was designed to sit along Thumamah Road in northern Riyadh, within the wider Al Widyan development corridor planned by Al Akaria as a major mixed-use urban district. This secure institutional headquarters responds to a context envisioned as a governmental zone accommodating key ministries and national institutions within a cohesive urban framework. The project reflects a contemporary civic approach that integrates stringent security requirements with advanced workplace planning.

The architectural concept is organised around a robust, defence-oriented podium containing secure access control, operational facilities, and structured parking, from which an articulated upper volume accommodates administrative and operational offices. A bespoke façade system developed using precast GRC panels acts as a protective environmental filter, allowing controlled natural daylight while preventing outward-facing views, supporting security protocols without compromising interior environmental quality.

The planning strategy emphasises efficient modern office environments with flexible layouts, collaborative spaces, and secure operational zones. Environmental performance is addressed through optimised orientation, controlled fenestration, and passive shading strategies, resulting in a resilient institutional headquarters that balances security, functionality, and contemporary architectural expression.

The Prototype Colleges for Al Ghad University establish a progressive model for higher education, developed to accommodate five specialized colleges within three buildings across eight locations. This design advances a scalable framework for medical, business, and technology learning environments, merging academic functionality with cultural and operational sensitivity.

Omrania’s approach resolves the spatial and social complexity of gender-specific layouts through an intelligent combination of physical and timed separation strategies, ensuring efficient use of shared, high-performance medical facilities. Each site is conceived to balance autonomy and repetition, maintaining a unified architectural identity while adapting to diverse urban contexts.
