General information

IOM opened an office in Khartoum in 2000 where activities initially focused on the resettlement of refugees to various receiving countries in collaboration with UNHCR. In 2002, IOM Sudan expanded its activities to include assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), specifically for their return and reintegration. Since 2004 IOM’s activities have increased to include work on the tracking and monitoring of displaced people and returnees, including assessments and reintegration and community stabilization assistance in returnees’ places of return; assistance to other returns including refugees from neighbouring countries and stranded Sudanese migrants abroad; and specific assistance for the return and reintegration of highly qualified Sudanese to contribute to the development of their country. Additionally, IOM has been providing assistance in the area of migration information, research, data collection and helping to build national capacities in migration management, including in the regional and international context. In addition to our Head Office in Khartoum, IOM also has two sub-offices in the Transitional Areas, in Kadugli (Southern Kordofan) and Abyei town, and three offices in Darfur, in Nyala, El Fasher and El Geneina
