Jag gillade denna artikel som jag fick i morse i mejl. En mycket spännande reflektion.
ADHD – The Modern Superpower
Dr. Julie Meyer MBE [email protected]
I hate the term ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) specifically, I hate the last word; disorder. Which is defined as “a set of symptoms that hinder one’s ability to function in today’s world”.
I especially hate that it is slapped onto kids who do not show a lot of interest in school, I can say with utter certainty that, were I to be a kid at school today, I would be labelled as ADHD.
But what if ADHD isn’t a disorder at all, what if it is simply a different set of neurological wiring, a kind that evolved specifically to AID human survival and innovation in an ever-changing world?
The Evolutionary Advantage of ADHD Traits
The traits associated with ADHD were not just useful, they were essential in hunter-gather societies. Our ancestors depended on quick thinking, fast reflexes, and a constant awareness of their surroundings. The very traits now being labelled “disordered” were once the hallmarks of an elite hunter-gatherer.
• Hypervigilance: Constantly scanning the environment for threats, which was crucial for survival in the wild.
• Impulsivity: Making fast, instinctive decisions in high-stakes situations—whether to fight, flee, or pursue prey.
• Hyperactivity: Covering long distances, staying physically active during hunts or nomadic movement.
• Hyperfocus: Zoning in on immediate tasks, such as tracking or hunting, where focus could mean the difference between life and death.
ADHD traits remained beneficial for thousands of years, until human society began to change with the advent of agriculture. As society became more sedentary and stagnant the behaviour patterns associated with ADHD became to look less beneficial, even maladaptive in the new predictable and repetitive lifestyle.
Why Modern Life is a Nightmare for the ADHD Mind:
In today’s world, ADHD traits can feel out of sync with modern demands. People with ADHD often find themselves struggling in environments designed for completely different neurological wiring:
• Long Hours of Inactivity: Sitting in classrooms or behind a computer for extended periods can be torture for someone whose brain is wired for action.
• Repetitive Tasks: The impulsive, hyperactive mind finds repetitive or mundane tasks unbearable.
• Information Overload: Our constant exposure to artificial stimuli through social media, advertising, and digital content can be overwhelming for an ADHD brain already primed to notice every change in the environment.
It’s like putting a shark in an aquarium—it wasn’t made for that environment, and neither was the ADHD brain for modern sedentary life.
Embracing ADHD: A Blueprint for Innovation and Progress
If you’ve been labelled with ADHD, it’s time to stop seeing yourself as “disordered” and start recognising the unique advantages your brain offers. ADHD isn’t something to overcome; it’s something to lean into. People with ADHD are often the ones driving society forward—they are the entrepreneurs, the risk-takers, the innovators.
In a world that constantly demands the next big thing, it’s minds like yours that create the breakthrough ideas that keep humanity progressing.
History is littered with examples of trailblazers who didn’t fit into neat, conventional boxes—individuals who defied the norms and changed the world.
They didn’t succeed despite their ADHD wiring; they succeeded because of it.
The future will continue to rely on people like you: the creators, inventors, and visionaries who see the world differently, who embrace uncertainty, and who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo.
Instead of feeling constrained by a system that wasn’t built for you, what if you reframed your ADHD as a superpower?
You have the energy, creativity, and drive to turn your unique wiring into something remarkable.
Your impulsivity fuels innovation.
Your hyperfocus breeds productivity. Your hyperactivity brings energy. These are traits that build businesses, launch movements, and shape the future.
A Call for Reform: The Education System Is Failing the Neurodivergent
But here’s the harsh reality: the present education system isn’t designed for the ADHD mind—or for any neurodivergent mind, for that matter.
The entire structure is built around a one-size-fits-all approach, designed to churn out compliant, predictable "farmers" who thrive in routine and linear thinking. It’s no wonder so many young people labelled with ADHD feel stifled, bored, and misunderstood in classrooms that value memorisation over creativity, and conformity over individuality.
The rigid nature of modern schooling is a factory line, where the goal is not to nurture unique talents but to produce students who can sit still, follow instructions, and fit into narrow definitions of success.
For neurodivergent individuals, this environment is not just unproductive—it’s suffocating. The system punishes those who think differently, labelling them as “disruptive” or “unfocused,” rather than recognising the powerful potential that lies in their alternative ways of thinking.
Imagine what would happen if we flipped the script.
Instead of asking children to mould themselves into the system, what if we rebuilt the system to suit them?
What if the classroom became a place of exploration, where impulsivity was channelled into creativity, where hyperactivity found an outlet in hands-on learning, and where hyperfocus was nurtured into deep, meaningful expertise?
The Role of ADHD in the Future of Progress
In a world where innovation is the currency of progress, people with ADHD have exactly what’s needed to thrive.
They are the pioneers, the inventors, the disruptors.
They are the ones who will challenge the old ways and bring forth new ideas, new industries, and new ways of thinking. But this potential can only be unlocked if we stop trying to medicate or tame the ADHD mind and start recognising it for what it truly is—a gift.
Our education system needs a radical overhaul, one that moves away from its focus on standardisation and toward one that encourages creative, dynamic, and neurodivergent minds to flourish.
The future will be built by people who think differently, and it’s time we celebrated that, not stifled it.
If you have been “diagnosed” with ADHD, you’re not just part of that future—you’re shaping it.
Stop trying to fit into the farmer’s mould and instead embrace the path that was always yours: that of the hunter, the trailblazer, the creator.
Your brain was designed to thrive in chaos, to innovate in uncertainty, and to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Society depends on minds like yours for its growth, its inventions, and its progress.
You are not a problem to be solved—you are the solution.
Here’s to my fellow “misfits” and “rebels” you are my tribe, and we are the tribe that changes the world!
