Loukoumia

🛒 Ingredients
This recipe uses gelatin for a reliable set, flavored with fresh orange. It's a simple, accessible way to make loukoumi at home.

3 tbsp powdered gelatin

½ cup (118 ml) cold water

2 cups (473 ml) granulated sugar

½ cup (118 ml) hot water

1 large orange (you will use the grated rind and juice)

Orange food coloring (optional)

½ cup chopped pistachios or toasted almonds (optional)

Confectioner's sugar (for coating)

👨‍🍳 Method
Soften the Gelatin: In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water and let it soften.

Make the Syrup: In a saucepan, combine the sugar and hot water. Bring to a boil, then add the softened gelatin and simmer for 20 minutes.

Add Flavor: Stir in the orange juice, grated rind, and a few drops of food coloring if desired.

Set: Pour the mixture into a loaf pan (ensuring it sits about an inch below the rim). If using nuts, stir them in now. Refrigerate until completely firm.

Cut and Coat: Turn the set block out onto a cutting board. Cut it into 1-inch cubes and roll each one in confectioner's sugar. You can mix a little cornstarch with the sugar to keep it from being overly sweet and to prevent sticking .
