Some stools hide the wood. Ebba shows it.

Solid oak with an integrated backrest. Cut from FSC-certified German oak and handcrafted in our factory in Malmö. Every grain line stays readable, and the stool gains character with the years instead of losing it.

The low back is also the handle you reach for every time you move it. Counter height 66 cm, bar height 76 cm. At Hallen, a house in Kivik. Oak against quartzite and terrazzo.

The facade of this hotel is nearly black. The rooms are almost white.

Milla Montis sits above the Puster Valley in Maranza, South Tyrol, and the contrast is the whole idea. Blackened wood on the facade, pale ash within. The curve cut into every opening is drawn from the pitchfork the farmers here use, so the building carries a tool on its front.

Inside it quietens. A bath stands at the window rather than behind a door. The balcony sits within the arch, so the view is framed before you reach it. The green loden of the region runs through the textiles. At the end of September the cattle come down from the high pastures to the farms around Maranza.

Hotel Milla Montis sits among those farms. Peter Pichler Architecture drew it from the wooden barns on the same hillside and finished it in October 2020, with the terrace running the length of the building under its arches, facing the valley. Arvid lounge chairs on the terrace. Teak on welded stainless steel, powder-coated black. Freja bar stools in the bar and the w**e vault. Under the arch at Hotel Milla Montis, the terrace runs the length of the building with a row of Arvid facing the valley.

The arch belongs to the exoskeleton Peter Pichler Architecture drew from the pitchfork the farmers around Maranza use, and the terrace sits inside its curve, blackened wood above and the forest beyond.

”We wanted to create something entirely our own, a house with character, simple and modern, where tradition and contemporary design come together through materials and form, with a sense of edge but also a great deal of heart.”

Franziska, on the hotel she and Roland created in Maranza, above the Puster Valley. She grew up on an organic farm. He grew up on the Untermüllerhof. What they were after was a place that could only exist here.

Peter Pichler Architecture won the competition in 2019 and finished it the year after. Four volumes shifted against one another so the building keeps the scale of the barns around it, and a facade curve drawn from the pitchfork the farmers on this hillside use. From the air it reads as a grid of arches, with a chair in every one. Arvid lounge chairs on the terrace. Teak on welded stainless steel, powder-coated black. The facade is an exoskeleton. In the evening it disappears, and only the arches remain.

Peter Pichler Architecture won an invited competition for Hotel Milla Montis in 2019 and completed it in October 2020. The building is broken into four volumes, shifted against one another so it never reads as a single mass and keeps the scale of the barns around it. It is a reinterpretation of the wooden barn, the vernacular typology of this valley, and the curve repeated across the front is taken from the pitchfork the farmers here use.

Wood does the work throughout, blackened outside and pale ash within. In daylight the facade recedes into the hillside. Outside meets inside. That is how Olivia Johansson describes Villa K in a single sentence. When we asked whether the glass dissolving the boundary had been a starting point or something that emerged, the answer was that it was the idea the whole house is built on.

You can read it everywhere. The same stone runs from the hall out to the pool. Almost every room was given a view of the lake, along axes that pull the eye out to the water. A tree grows in a glazed courtyard in the middle of the plan.
By the water, a lounge set on a stone plinth. Teak on welded stainless steel, made to stay out through the season rather than be carried in and out of it.

Villa K has more than one room outside.

A courtyard cut into the roof, open to the sky and closed on all four sides. A terrace at the pool, facing the lake. A lounge set under the overhang. Each is used for something different, and each is furnished rather than decorated. We asked Olivia Johansson how teak and Dekton hold up in a Nordic climate. ”Two very robust and durable materials.” On what by Crea adds to a house like this one, she said it brings a heightened sense of minimalism with carefully chosen materials, exactly the way the house itself is composed.

”You want to be sure the piece ages with dignity.”

Olivia Johansson, on what she looks for in furniture she knows will still be standing in twenty years. The craftsmanship and the quality, she said. It should work with the house, be pared back, and still have a clear character of its own.
She thinks about the building the same way. You want it to hold up for many years and be just as good in any season. In summer the lake reflects against the house. In winter it reads almost as a dark mirror, which lifts the house and its shape.

Wild grass, cut grass, stones, then the sea.
The furniture stays out through all of it. Welded stainless steel under the powder coat, and solution-dyed olefin cushions, so the colour runs through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. Salt air and wind off the water are what it was built for.
