Villa K has more than one room outside.

A courtyard cut into the roof, open to the sky and closed on all four sides. A terrace at the pool, facing the lake. A lounge set under the overhang. Each is used for something different, and each is furnished rather than decorated. We asked Olivia Johansson how teak and Dekton hold up in a Nordic climate. ”Two very robust and durable materials.” On what by Crea adds to a house like this one, she said it brings a heightened sense of minimalism with carefully chosen materials, exactly the way the house itself is composed.

”You want to be sure the piece ages with dignity.”

Olivia Johansson, on what she looks for in furniture she knows will still be standing in twenty years. The craftsmanship and the quality, she said. It should work with the house, be pared back, and still have a clear character of its own.
She thinks about the building the same way. You want it to hold up for many years and be just as good in any season. In summer the lake reflects against the house. In winter it reads almost as a dark mirror, which lifts the house and its shape.

Diana in Dekton and Signe in slatted teak, both on welded stainless steel frames, powder-coated black. August is when the whole terrace is in use. October is when it turns out none of it has to be packed away.

Wild grass, cut grass, stones, then the sea.
The furniture stays out through all of it. Welded stainless steel under the powder coat, and solution-dyed olefin cushions, so the colour runs through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. Salt air and wind off the water are what it was built for.

There are only a few Sundays like this in a year. The furniture is out for all of them. Everything out here is made to stay outside through the season rather than be carried in and out of it. Welded steel, handmade to order in Malmö. Covered for ten years and built to be repaired rather than replaced, with spare parts available long after purchase.

Every fastening on this chair is stainless.

Not for the look of it. It means nothing can bleed a rust stain onto the frame, or onto the terrace beneath it. Kenny Lounge chair. Fully welded stainless steel frame, powder-coated black, with a solution dyed cushion that lifts off for storage. Designed by Alexandra Pettersson and welded in our own factory in Sweden.

This is the part of the house that usually gets left as a view.

My home.

Not the whole house. The one part that is not finished. The corner that never worked. The space outside that everyone walks across and nobody sits in. Outside is often the last room to get furnished, and the one that gets used most once it is.

Not the room you planned around. The one people drift to, stay in past the hour they meant to leave, and come back to the next morning before anyone else is awake. Furnish it that way and it stops being a view and starts being a room.

A garden is not what is left over when the house ends. It holds the long afternoons, the slow start to a day, the hours when nobody is going anywhere. Furnish it that way and it stops being a view and starts being a room.

A Scandinavian sun lounger designed for the hours when there is nowhere else you need to be. At this private home in Höllviken, Sweden, two Bazo sun loungers sit beside the Algot outdoor lounge table, surrounded by warm timber, deep black architecture and shifting summer light.
