A customer generally used heat-treated AISI 4340 and DIN 1.2344 steels at different hardness levels for its end milling tool holders.

The main problem was long production times caused by the heat treatment. Even if the heat treatment improved the hardness, the steel became brittle which led to cracks.

Toolox® 44 was a better option. It is already hardened and tempered, resulting in a tougher tool that lasts 15 times longer and is faster to produce.

Manufacturing advanced mold tools with Toolox® 33: Insights from Nordtool.

When manufacturing advanced mold tools, balancing production efficiency with the high demands for finished surface quality is a common challenge.

Swedish toolmaker Nordtool AB have completed two advanced mold projects using Toolox® 33. Delivered already quenched and tempered, the material offered distinct advantages throughout the machining process:

⚙️ Milling efficiency: Nordtool was able to maintain milling speeds at approximately the same level as standard structural steel (S355). This excellent machinability contributed to a predictable process and significant production time savings.

⚙️ Toughness and stability: Traditional operations like drilling and threading were performed at controlled speeds normal for a pre-hardened steel, ensuring that the material’s inherent toughness and structural stability were fully maintained.

⚙️ Surface quality: The homogenous structure of Toolox® 33, combined with precision machining, resulted in mold surfaces of very high quality.

By utilizing a pre-hardened steel that machines efficiently, workshops can optimize their lead times while securing long-term tool performance.

Transferring hot coke discharged at 600-800 °C is a brutal environment for any equipment. Traditional 304-grade stainless steel often gives up too soon, leading to cracks, chipping, and costly maintenance stops.

That’s why this customer decided to test 6 mm Toolox® 33 plates as liners in their chute conveyors.

The result? Approximately double the service life compared to stainless steel.
