Amazon’s €1 Billion Gamble: Reshaping the Belgian Logistics Landscape
The Belgian e-commerce landscape is bracing for a major shift. Last month, Amazon announced a massive capital injection of over €1 billion into the Belgian market, scheduled for rollout between 2025 and 2027.
According to Eva Faict, Amazon's Country Manager, this investment is designed to aggressively close the gap between the tech giant and the current market leader, bol.
At the heart of this strategy is Belgium’s sole logistics center, which went live in late 2022 alongside the launch of Amazon.com.be. Currently, the facility operates with a lean, flexible workforce of around 100 people, split evenly between direct employees and temporary staff working primarily through the night.
Their mission? To process parcels flowing in from established warehouses in Germany and France, preparing them for the final mile. Faict notes that despite current activity, there is "plenty of room to expand" within the facility.
The core of the new investment strategy is speed. Amazon aims to replicate its global success formula, wide selection plus rapid delivery specifically for the Belgian consumer. A significant portion of the €1 billion will fund the infrastructure for same-day delivery.
"We are not going to do that for all products right away, but for items people like to receive as quickly as possible. Think diapers or toothpaste." says Eva Faict, Country Manager
To achieve same-day speeds in congested urban environments like Antwerp, Amazon is pivoting away from traditional vans for the last mile. The company is investing heavily in a fleet of cargo bikes, a move that Faict argues will make operations both "faster and cleaner."
According to Roel Gevaers, an e-commerce professor at the University of Antwerp, the stakes are high. While Amazon has successfully overtaken Coolblue to secure the number two spot across all categories in Belgium, the gap to the top remains significant. Bol currently generates 2.5 times more revenue than Amazon in the region.
With a parallel €1.4 billion investment planned for the Netherlands, it is clear that Amazon is launching a synchronized offensive to capture the Benelux market.
