Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) capacity will hit 10 billion liters in 2024, up from 6 billion liters in 2023 and well on track to reach forecast 2030 demand - according to the latest update of OKelly Acumen's global SAF projects database - but raw material supply remains a challenge as production scales up, and will impact the future choice of technology.

The capital investment costs for new capacity have risen at ~6%p.a. over the last 16 years, with recent pressure from bottlenecks in the supply chain of supply chain for certain equipment and higher transportation costs. We have analyzed more than 50 projects competed in 2008-2024, comparing investment costs for greenfield and brownfield capacity, and the economies of scale with respect to plant size.
