When a part breaks on a ship weeks from port, you have two options. Wait weeks for delivery or print it on board.

The Royal Netherlands Navy chose the second one. UltiMaker printers on board, a digital catalogue of approved parts at headquarters, and a crew that can produce what they need without waiting on anyone. A brass water filter replaced by a PETG-printed version. An antenna mount printed in carbon fibre composite.

The Navy is an extreme example of a problem most organisations recognise. Long supply chains, single-point dependencies, parts that are no longer manufactured.
