Malema faces money laundering charges in Limpopo court today. The former ANC Youth League leader owes the South African Revenue Service $2 million in unpaid taxes, but his supporters say the trial is a political move by president Zuma, whose government Malema has blamed for the shooting of platinum miners in Marikana in August.

In this article on the make-up brand Avon bringing South African women out of poverty and into financial autonomy, the one sentence which stuck with me was this:

"Trade union estimates say black women in South Africa earn an average of 1,200 rand (£94) a month, while white women earn 9,600 rand and white men around 19,000 rand."

Although it sadly did not surprise me at all, it still makes me angry that South Africa is divided at every level by lines of race, gender, language, ethnicity, and geography. The income ladder above from black women to black men (not included in the example but with a significantly higher income than black women), to white women, and finally white men, is a ladder which only few South Africans climb, but which most dream about.

Recent projects include:

- A research project with UNHCR Geneva and the African Centre for Migration Studies (ACMS) at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, during late 2011, consisting of an extensive literature review on the impact of refugees on host communities.

- A series of research reports to be completed by summer 2012 for the Council of the Baltic Sea States, on current structures and forms of cooperation on trafficking for labour exploitation in the member states. This study is based on mainly questionnaires and interviews, including more than 100 governmental and non-governmental actors, and will result in eleven national reports.

UNODC has created a Case Law database of human trafficking cases. At the moment it looks a bit thin, but it is definitely an interesting idea with great potential. If you are interested in learning more about different types of trafficking in persons in different countries, this is a page you should add to your bookmarks.
