Opening of the “Long live Laisvall” exhibition – supported by us at Boliden

From its opening in 1943 and over nearly six decades, our mine in Laisvall helped the small community flourish, with job opportunities, a cinema, shops, cafés and a rich cultural life. Since the mine closed in 2001, we have worked with remediation and assessment of the mine site, including the support embankment project carried out in 2026.
Last week, Silvermuséet in Laisvall opened the exhibition “Länge leve Laisvall” (“Long live Laisvall”), developed in collaboration with us at Boliden. The exhibition is based on personal stories and rich image material, highlighting the people, the community and the mining operations. Our Environmental Coordinator Isabell Burlin works with the support embankment project in Laisvall and has also contributed material to the new exhibition:
“It has been very rewarding to contribute to the exhibition, not least because we know there is such a strong interest in Laisvall’s cultural and industrial history,” says Isabell.

Find out more about the exhibition here:

När ett samhälles grundfunktion inte längre finns blir dess historia lätt osynlig. I utställningen lyfter vi därför Laisvalls berättelse.

Today is International Day of Women in Mining.

Meet Andrea, a machine operator at Boliden Aitik, one of Europe’s largest open-pit copper mines.

In the TV series Gruvan (The Mine), Andrea helps show what everyday life in mining looks like. It’s a workplace built on teamwork, safety, and people who look out for one another.

Today is World Ocean Day.

Boliden employees are given the opportunity to contribute to global charity organizations and research projects by donating part of their salary through the company-funded charity, Bcause.

One of them is The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit organization removing plastic from oceans and rivers.

This matters because plastic does not disappear in nature. It breaks down into microplastics that spread through ecosystems, enter the food chain, and end up on our plates.

World Environment Day 2026

At Boliden, we work to reduce emissions while providing the metals needed for tomorrow. We are electrifying parts of our mining operations, replacing diesel-powered equipment with electric alternatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve working conditions underground.

The Rävliden deposit at the Kristineberg mine operates entirely with electric machinery, which is unique in the industry. This includes, among other things, a five-kilometer-long electric trolley line, developed in collaboration with Epiroc and ABB, where mining trucks connect to cables in the mine roof to transport ore from a depth of 750 meters to the surface.

We need more engineers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Since 2020, we have been partnering with CoGig to give female engineering students insight into our operations. In Sweden through Female Technical Engineer, in Finland through Female Leader Engineer. Lately the participants visited our facilities in Aitik and Kokkola and got a close-up look at what working in the mining industry looks like.

Boliden Odda has expanded into one of Europe’s largest zinc smelters. But the development is about more than increased capacity – it’s about making better use of raw materials and advancing production towards a more resource‑efficient smelter.

Biodiversity in practice – from moss to reindeer lichen

On the International Day for Biological Diversity, we highlight our restoration work in Maurliden. Since 2025, Boliden has been developing test sites in a decommissioned mine area, exploring how disturbed land can be restored step by step.

Through the Re:moss project, we have rebuilt the conditions for life to return. Now, within the Symbios research collaboration, the next challenge is enabling reindeer lichen to re‑establish. This is particularly important, as access to lichen-rich grazing land has declined significantly in reindeer herding areas.

By combining research, responsibility and practical action, we take long‑term responsibility for the landscapes where we operate – even after mining has ended.

How do you plan for something that needs to last for hundreds of years – long after you have left your job? For the team working with reclamation at Boliden Aitik, this is part of everyday life.

The Aitik mine outside Gällivare has been in operation since 1968 and is today one of Europe’s largest open-pit copper mines. Around 900 people work here in an operation that covers the entire chain, from exploration and mining to mineral processing and long-term strategic planning.
