What led to a church 90 meters underground?

It all traces back to a blast in 1946 at our Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden.
When miners returned, they discovered a rock formation that many believed resembled Christ. The mysterious figure attracted visitors, newspaper coverage, and led to many theories about how it had appeared.

The figure eventually disappeared, but the story lived on. Today, Saint Anna's Church, located 90 meters underground, stands as part of that history.

25 years after mining operations ended in Laisvall, our responsibility continues.

Although many years have passed, we continue to focus strongly on evaluating and implementing appropriate measures to ensure both environmental aspects and stability at the closed mine site. One example is the reinforcement of the Sjömagasinet tailings dam, a measure that will strengthen the dam’s stability over time and help meet current requirements.

A key part of the work has been maintaining an open and ongoing dialogue with local residents. By sharing information we aim to create understanding around the work being carried out and its purpose.
