Education with Migrant Students - a challenge and an opportunity

After a short introduction to the project we invite you to ‘taste’ and discuss two of the results:
A practical teachers’ guide based on the experience of participating teachers
A detailed guide to a method developed in Ukraine for extra-curricular teams

A new situation arose in Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine: a huge migration of European students, nationally and internationally. Even teachers with experience with migrant students confronted new challenges. We brought together teachers from Ukraine, Poland and Sweden to explore both the challenges and the opportunities.

Some key words: integration, trauma-informed pedagogy, psychological support, enabling transformative learning, intercultural understanding.

The STSEM project is privileged to include Olena Pometun, a major figure in pedagogy in the countries of the former Soviet Union; a pioneer in the shift from 'post-Soviet' pedagogy to modern, transformative education, i.a. as leader of one of the world's most successful programs of Education for Sustainable Development, ESDA. Now, in semi-retirement, still a member of the Ukrainian National Academy of Pedagogical Science, and tutor of STSEM teachers.

In STSEM her erstwhile colleagues and students include Galina Gupan, project manager of STSEM; Galina Sierova, leader of the Ukrainian partner organisation; and numerous outstanding teachers formerly engaged in ESDA, such as Olena Zarychna and Ludmila Pilipchatina.

We travelled to Lublin, and we travelled internally with every exchange and story. We visited the closed metro stations in Kharkiv turned into classrooms; voyaged to each other’s schools, situations and solutions, touched ground with different educational policies and were swept away by our common values and endeavours.

- I have a feeling of warmth and connection, concluded one of the teachers. There are three countries here but we are one team.

Education Without Borders Conference – The opening

Tears and translations

Do they teach interpreters how to speak while crying? a participant wondered during the opening part of the conference Education without Borders in Lublin, Poland. She knew priests make sure to learn this.

Whether the answer is yes or no, interpreter Mila Guryeyeva did not skip a syllable, but had translations and tears flowing from her at equal pace while transmitting what the project had meant to the teachers present in the auditorium.

In September, twenty pedagogues and teachers from three countries gathered 75 km from the Ukrainian border for the children’s sake, for their own sake, for all our sakes. As one Polish teacher put it to her Ukrainian colleagues; your children are our children.

And so the conference began.

Education without Borders Conference – The beginning

ACTION

Dalai Lama is credited to have said: "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito."

When Russia extended their invasion in Ukraine 2022, Marilyn Mehlmann, co-founder of Legacy17, was glued to her phone, sending and awaiting messages and news from her friends and colleagues in Ukraine. The worry was palpable, the news from Ukraine unfathomable.

She turned anxiety into action and called Galina Gupan in Kyiv: - Tell me what we can do to help teachers?

Two and a half years later, 1000 Ukrainian students and 85 teachers have received support from two projects. Support to maintain connections to classmates and the country, psychological support, pedagogical support, technical support, moral support.

A heartfelt thanks to all hands on deck: funders, co-initiators, collaborators, advisors, teachers, volunteers and children!
