With over 20 years in Britain, Heuman is as much English as Swedish. Comparing the two nations’ design sensibilities, she notes a practical streak in Sweden — “everything should be wipeable” — while British interiors lean into comfort and warmth.⁠

“Britons worry less about their things, which is inspiring to me as a Swede. There’s more use of textiles, like upholstered ottomans instead of hard coffee tables, and even wall-to-wall carpet in bathrooms. Their homes aren’t as well-insulated, so textiles help. I also find them to be particularly good and placing furniture to make you feel more comfortable, especially in living rooms. A sofa, for instance, should always have a side table for your drink.”⁠

Following this week’s Academy event, we turn our gaze to the designs that shaped much of 20th-century design history — furniture driven by new materials, industrial production and a belief that good design should be accessible, efficient and built for everyday use.⁠

As Charles Eames put it: “The best for the most for the least.” A principle that came to define an era of office design focused on doing more with less.⁠

Harald Notini lamps, in plural. ⁠

Harald Notini was a Swedish designer and artistic director known for shaping modern lighting and glass design in the early 20th century. In 1916, he joined Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik and Pukebergs Glasbruk as artistic director, guiding both the Stockholm factory and Pukeberg’s glass production. Under his direction, Böhlmarks moved from traditional, imitation-style fixtures toward innovative, modern designs.⁠
⁠
Notini’s work spans several stylistic phases: the elegant Swedish Grace of the 1920s, the strictly functional fixtures presented at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, and the Swedish Modern aesthetic of the 1940s–50s, often crafted in brass with glass, wood, and leather details. Today, his designs are celebrated for their distinctive, forward-thinking character and remain highly prized by collectors.⁠

The story of Poul Henningsen and Louis Poulsen ⁠

Henningsen grew up in gas-lit Frederiksberg, watching his mother (actress Agnes Henningsen) squint over stage scripts. By 1920 he was experimenting with concentric shades in his attic, measuring lux values until he found a glare-free formula. Each PH lamp uses logarithmic spacing: inner surfaces are matte to diffuse light; undersides glow warmer to flatter skin tones.⁠
⁠
Louis Poulsen adopted the mantra “Design to shape light,” making engineering elegance their house style. This was as radical as Dieter Rams’s later Braun minimalism, yet emotionally warmer – a northern antidote to simplicity-only product design.⁠
