Important Spring Sale presents "Hämta vatten" by Anders Zorn and a Gustavian marquetry commode by G. Iwersson (master in Stockholm 1778-1813) as two highlights in the auction.

When Anders Zorn passes away, he does so as one of Sweden's foremost artists of all time. Whatever medium he embraced, he did so with a rarely seen skill and elegance, seemingly uncomplicated and spontaneous, yet often carefully studied and prepared. Likewise, he moved effortlessly between the aristocracy and the common folk, both clothed and buttoned-up as well as naked and free.

From a young age, Anders Zorn was drawn to the world beyond his homeland and undertook many journeys to various exciting places. His remarkably skilled technique as a watercolourist garnered international attention, not least through portraits and genre scenes exhibited at shows across Europe. Zorn's breakthrough came during his travels in London and Paris, where he adapted to an international audience and developed his characteristic painting style.

Despite international influences and successes, he always held his homeland in Dalarna in high regard. Mora remained the obvious place for celebrations such as Christmas and Midsummer, and it was in the simple everyday life that he felt most at home. After nearly ten years with Paris as a base, Anders and his wife Emma chose to return to Sweden in the summer of 1896 and settle in Mora, where the artist deepened his interest in the Swedish landscape and rural life. Here, he developed a more nationally oriented subject matter, depicting the common folk, traditions, and nature, often in the form of naked or semi-naked figures in open-air settings.

Iwersson was perhaps the most accomplished Gustavian cabinetmaker after Georg Haupt, and he became the leading master during the subsequent Late Gustavian period. Although the chest of drawers in the auction is unsigned, it can nevertheless be attributed with certainty to the work of Gottlieb Iwersson.

Presenting Carnations in a Glass of Water by Helene Schjerfbeck at Helsinki Spring Sale, executed c.1888.

Flowers and children were central motifs for Schjerfbeck in her work from the 1880s. The availability of child models was quite good, but they were at the same time relatively demanding subjects and difficult to arrange. Schjerfbeck was able to emphasise fragile and distinctly feminine emotional states in her paintings featuring children, which can also be seen as a certain limitation. In contrast, in her floral motifs she was able to express both the vitality of nature and its nuances, whilst at the same time reflecting her own state of mind at that moment.

From childhood, Schjerfbeck had felt a strong connection to nature and admired the beauty of plants and their magnificent colours. Floral motifs and other forms of still life were themes to which she constantly returned throughout her career, and they provided a welcome and much-loved pastime when she had time to spare from her portrait and landscape work.

The work now on sale is a fine example of the expressiveness Schjerfbeck achieved in her flower paintings. The carnations in the water glass give a lively impression and seem to be embroiled in a conflict. The carnation in the centre stands defiantly, whilst two are bent far over the rim of the glass and look as though they wish to leave. The drama is heightened by the dark and richly nuanced background, which lends depth whilst simultaneously highlighting the interplay between the flowers. It is fascinating to imagine the emotions and thoughts that flowed through the artist as she created the painting.

Presenting "Ship of Fate" by Wäinö Aaltonen as part of the Helsinki Spring Sale, online now.

Aaltonen studied drawing and painting at the Finnish Art Society's drawing school in Turku, but later developed an interest in stone carving and sculpture. He learned the techniques of marble carving from his relative, the sculptor Aarre Aaltonen, and apprenticed with stone carvers in Hirvensalo. His significant breakthrough came with the Turku Art Society's 25th-anniversary exhibition in 1916, where critics were impressed by Aaltonen's grand lines, sense of style, and monumental creations. His first solo exhibition was held in Vaasa in 1922. After a trip to Italy in 1923, he was deeply inspired by cubism, which influenced many of his works.

Wäinö Aaltonen's art displays great respect for materials, whether it be marble, bronze, or granite, reminiscent of Egypt. He is renowned for his skilled attention to detail and ability to capture movement in solid materials. Aaltonen has had a significant influence on younger generations of artists, with a prolific body of work primarily showcased at the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum in Turku.
