As you may know, Miss Universe’s pageant took place in El Salvador this year. I was very excited to work with my very dear colleague Rosemarie Garcia Prieto Viaud as interpreters at the Charity Gala.
We met several of the most beautiful young women of the planet. Mainly:
2., Miss France, very charming, my favorite, of course
3. Miss El Salvador, also my favorite! 🤩
4. Miss Hungary, who was so happy to chat in her mother tongue
5. Miss Portugal and Miss Korea (I had never noticed how short I actually am 😅). Miss Portugal actually came from the town next to the village where I lived in Portugal
6. Miss Greece, whom I was happy to greet in her mother tongue
7. Miss India, who loved our folkloric dance that reminded her of home
8. Miss Japan, I told her I dream of visiting her country
9. Miss Jamaica, Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Bahamas, professional and joyful women all
And last, but not least…
10. Miss Interpreter!!! 🤪😂🤣
Working as an interpreter, I have the opportunity to meet so many different people from around the world and to participate in many gatherings around the globe.
On this occasion, it was a great pleasure to meet such lovely and beautiful young women, and debunk the myth that beauty pageant candidates are “airheads”. Every single one of the ladies I spoke with was much more than a model or a beauty queen. Most were professionals, from medical doctors (Miss Jamaica) to student of Climate Change graduate degrees (Miss Bahamas) to published author (Miss Hungary), and much more.
All of these delightful women showed great kindness to us, and we discovered the inner beauty that shone even brighter than the elegant sequined dresses.
I must confess that many concepts I had regarding these beauty pageants were broken after conversing with these interesting ladies. I could see their commitment and the endurance they showed.
I have the greatest respect for all the women I met on that magical night, and I am once again immensely grateful for my profession.
