DDD Printing 3D-Printing, Cosplay and Product Design

Utilizing CAD and a huge 40cm x 40cm x 45cm 3D-printer to print imagination into reality.

Combining 3D-printing with cosplay and product development, that is the heart of DDD Printing and its foundation. I’ve been building things out of wood and LEGO since I was very young and my passion for creating things has only grown during the years. I started learning to use CAD to aide my designing in 2009 which was a useful tool when I started with cosplaying in 2012 and has been ever since. W

ith a versatile knowledge of CAD, I began studying design and product realization engineering at KTH in Stockholm in 2014. This was also when I became interested in additive manufacturing, otherwise known as 3D-printing. Being marveled by the versatility and strengths of additive manufacturing, I decided to jump into the 3D-printing business. After doing my research on different 3D-printers I ended up choosing a gMax 1.5 XT printer. This was due to it’s large print volume of 16” x 16” x 18” (approximately 40cm x 40cm x 45cm) which would allow me to print huge objects. During the assembly of the printer I was faced with numerous problems and as I overcame them I achieved a deeper understanding of the mechanics of 3D-printing. From there I’ve been working with 3D-printing props for cosplay, developing my own products and also taking on whatever projects that clients need 3D-printed. The filament I print with is mainly a heightened performance based PLA filament that is made to increase the flexibility and overall performance characteristics of normal PLA. Color options are based on what I have in stock, but I try to keep a vast amount of colors in stock so don't hesitate to ask if you have a specific preference of color! Have you found a 3D file on www.thingiverse.com of something you want 3D-printed? Do you dream of having a certain cosplay prop created in the highest detail? Do you have a project where you need help with CAD design or creating a prototype? If you do, don’t hesitate to send me an email with a description of the project!

On the 24:th of Mars the Etnographical Museum in Stockholm opened a new exhibition about Japanese culture and cosplay. I sent in some 3D-printed models to the museum with a bit of text explaining the process of 3D-printing things for cosplay. Some of the models I loaned out to the museeum can be seen in the pictures below, a few Pokemon models scale 1:10 and the keychain of the weapon Earthshaker from the Kingdom Hearts series. The models and text will be shown in the museum's cosplay exhibition so you can head over there and see them for yourself if you are interested. More pictures will come later!

"Do you wanna build a snowman?"

Just finished Anna's clasps from the movie Frozen. Hardest part of the build was creating the spirals in the clasps because you basically NEVER see them close up in the movie so had to work with what pictures I could get. They were printed with silver PLA and will be delivered lightly wet-sanded so the costumer can use the color of the plastic and shade them right away, or choose to paint them with another shade of metal if they so choose. Hope they will look good when in use!

Have been tinkering with some settings since I switched to a smaller nozzle but now it was time to test it out for real! Printed Anna's clasp for her cape from the movie Frozen in silver PLA with layer thickness of 0.1mm. Will do a new print of it over night with 0.05mm layer thickness and a few other changed settings to try and print it with even higher quality. What do you think Silje Danielsen Cosplayer and Makeup Artist, will it do for the cape you are sewing? ;)

Earlier this week I switched the main nozzle used for printing from 0.5mm to 0.35mm. This will enable finer prints with better resolution but requires more calibration and finer tuning. I'm hoping it's worth it for the increase in quality, pictures of prints printed with the 0.35 nozzle will be coming soon!
