This morning, we received this impressive book in the mail. It contains the article Towards a new area of Rock Art documentation, written by James Dodd and Ellen Meijer in 2018 for the festskrift in honor of Ph Dr. Gerhard Milstreu.

Rock art, which has been created over tens of thousands of years, from the deep past to the present day, is found in landscapes worldwide. This richly illustrated volume, the ninth to appear in the Getty Conservation Institute’s Readings in Conservation series, is the first interdisciplinary anthology to fix us on the conservation and management of this remarkable heritage. Divided thematically into nine parts, the book’s 133 readings survey the art of published writing on the subject. Initial sections probe the origins and significance of these often-enigmatic images, then consider the role of science and technology in dating, monitoring, and documenting them. Subsequent readings discuss rock art’s physical characteristics and weathering, its importance to Indigenous communities, the documentation of site management, the role of governments, the value of public outreach, and the effects of climate change.
