Nitrogen isn't created equal. The form you feed changes what the plant can do with it. Here's what a decade of peer-reviewed science says about arginine and early growth:

❤️ It's cheaper to use. Building protein from nitrate costs 5.81 gC per gN. From arginine, 3.02. That saved carbon goes straight into growth.

❤️ The plant never switches it off. Nitrate and ammonium uptake shut down as the seedling fills up. Arginine uptake doesn't. It's governed by carbon status, not nitrogen status.

❤️ It works when reserves are empty. Arginine uptake holds. That's the early-season window, when carbohydrate is scarce.

❤️ Plants want it. Uptake rates roughly 4× ammonium-N and 10× nitrate-N. Taken up intact. Arginine is already the tree's own nitrogen store.

❤️ It stays put. Positively charged, so it binds to the substrate. Nitrate spikes then crashes within 48 hours — up to 70% lost. Arginine gives a steady, low, lasting supply. Higher recovery. Higher foliar N. More biomass.

❤️ It builds roots. Fine root proportion up to 71% vs 59%. Mycorrhizal colonisation 80–82% vs 62–32%. Roots are what carry a seedling through planting shock.

❤️ It doesn't punish the plant. Ammonium nitrate at outplanting raised mortality in both spruce and pine. Arginine phosphate didn't.

Same nitrogen. Different chemistry. Rooted in science.

A century ago, Scandinavia's forests were being logged out.

Today Sweden holds around 3,347 million cubic metres of standing timber, roughly double the 1920s figure. Norway's volume more than tripled over the same century. Finland's growing stock went from 1.5 to 2.5 billion cubic metres in fifty years.

Sweden's Forestry Act of 1903 was the first law anywhere to require replanting after felling. It still stands - regeneration completed by the third year after harvest. Norway has run the world's first national forest inventory since 1919. You don't get to take a tree without putting the next one in. Over a century, that compounds. And all of it rests on the seedling. Sweden plants around 400 million a year. A rotation measured in decades turns on how well each one roots in its first two.
