State of the Global Climate 2025

World Meteorological Organization´s (WMO) State of the Global Climate report 2025 confirms that 2015-2025 are the hottest 11-years on record. 2025 was the second or third hottest year on record, at about 1. 43 °C above the 1850-1900 average. Extreme events around the world, including intense heat, heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones, caused disruption and devastation and highlighted the vulnerability of our inter-connected economies and societies.

The ocean continues to warm and absorb carbon dioxide. It has been absorbing the equivalent of about eighteen times the annual human energy use each year for the past two decades. Annual sea ice extent in the Arctic was at or near a record low. Antarctic sea ice extent was the third lowest on record, and glacier melt continued unabated, according to the report.

For the first time, the report includes the Earth’s energy imbalance as one of the key climate indicators. Increasing levels of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere due to human activities are a major driver of climate change.

Circular economy roadmaps and strategigies world wide 2025

Chatham House updates the mapping of which countries have produced policy documents for circular transition. 66 countries have published at least one action plan or similar. The fastest increase is in developing countries. Only 36 procent of the measures are specific with both time-bound targets and assigned ownership. Further 10 procent contains detailed information on financing or budgeted funds.

Let´s look at some examples. Nigeria leads globally in fiscal instruments with 40 highly specific actions, followed by Indonesia with 32. Chad demonstrates strong commitment to circular plastics solutions, contributing 18 highly specific actions. Developing countries now account for 33 procent of published frameworks and 34 procent of quantitative targets, establishing benchmarks for policy clarity.

Research and innovation (11 procent), fiscal instruments (10 procent), and brokering (9 procent) dominate policy categories, while waste management remains the most action-intensive sector (29 procent). However, worker and consumer rights receive only 0.5 procent of actions, and roadmap governance only 2.5 procent. This near-absence of just transition principles threatens social sustainability and public acceptance.

Fewer than 10 procent of policy frameworks address international coordination, and only 9 procent explicitly consider trade-related aspects. Countries largely develop frameworks independently of any international coordination principles or mechanisms.

International Women's Day 8 March 2026 - for women and girls around the world to demand equal rights and equal justice to enforce, exercise, and enjoy those rights.

International Women’s Day 2026 comes at a time when justice systems are under strain. Conflict, repression, and political tensions are weakening the rule of law. The result – women and girls have just 64 per cent of the legal rights of men.

Only one-third of parliamentarians across the EU are women, according the data from Eurostat. In 2025, women held 33.6% of the seats in national parliaments across the EU, marking a 5.4 percentage points (pp) increase compared with 2015.

Finland (46.0 %), Sweden (44.8 %) and Denmark (44.7 %) had the highest shares of female representatives in 2025, while Cyprus (14.3 %), Hungary (15.6 %) and Romania (22.0 %) had the lowest.

Compared with 2015, all EU countries recorded increases in the share of female representatives, except Germany (-3.5 pp). Among the EU countries in which the share of women in parliament rose, 4 reported increases above 10 pp: Latvia (+19.0 pp), Malta (+14.8 pp), France (+10.9 pp) and Czechia (+10.6 pp).

New publication: Advancements in digital health across the Nordic region 2025

This publication presents a comprehensive overview of the current state and future direction of digital health in the Nordic countries, with a special focus on infrastructure development, preventive digital health solutions, and inclusion in digital transformation. The report outlines the principles of digital inclusion and patients’ rights, noting the risks of unequal access due to digital literacy gaps, socioeconomic factors, or regional disparities.

The first theme explores the foundational elements required to support digital health. Nordic perspectives illustrate how integrated digital ecosystems can break down barriers between health care service delivery and wider health innovation environments. The publication addresses the secondary use of health data, presenting national approaches as well as cybersecurity for data.

The second theme focuses on the shift from reactive to preventive health systems enabled by digital tools. Artificial intelligence in Finnish health care is examined not only as a technological advancement but also as a driver of new skills and competencies among professionals. Telehealth and remote consultations are presented as central to integrated care models, improving accessibility, and supporting continuity of care regardless of geographical distance.

Nordic country case studies from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden provide diverse approaches to safeguarding inclusivity during the digital transition. The role of health personnel is also emphasized, particularly the importance of developing digital and AI-related competencies to ensure safe, ethical, and person-centered care.
