Got a bunch of questions from yesterdays post, so here’s a video showing similar work but in better lighting 😄

This time it wasn’t a damaged frame, instead it was a frame and a door that didn’t originally belong to each other. Because of that the fittings didn’t match.

A priest house from the 1600s needed to be able to close a door. Could’ve done a lot less, also could’ve done a lot more. Think I found the sweet spot. ”Lagom” is the Swedish term.

This repair was done in three steps, first off it needed some new wood behind the visible repair, secondly the repair was made as if no fitting would be installed and thirdly I chiseled out room for the fitting.

All hand tools on this one.

Here’s another quick and dirty way to sharpen!

Again, this is no way to handle expensive Japanese hollow back chisels or hand plane knives. But it’s really fast and affordable.

This is just one building. One building from 1936. Today I emptied our room in the basement, the windows are restored.

But when I take just a few steps in any direction, other buildings are waiting for me or someone else to get started.

This job took about two years to complete, about five employees working full time solely on this project.

The sheer volume of old houses with old windows is both scary and humbling. I don’t want to expand, that would move me away from the craft. I just want more colleagues in the business. Serious competitors.

Get schooled, hold your head high and you’ll never be out of work!

🇸🇪 Ett hus. Ett enda hus från 1936. Idag tömde jag källarförrådet, fönsterna är restaurerade.

Men om jag bara tar några steg i vilken riktning som helst så står fler hus och ropar på mig, eller någon annan som kan.

Detta jobbet tog två år att färdigställa på ungefär fem heltidsanställda.

Mängden gamla hus med restaureringsbehov är både skrämmande och lockande. Jag vill inte expandera mer, då riskerar jag att tappa kontakten med hantverket. Jag vill bara ha fler branschkollegor, eller seriösa konkurrenter.

Utbilda er och håll huvudet högt så kommer ni inte gå utan jobb en dag i era liv.

I found myself standing in this closet, gaze stuck in between the near and the far, feeling blessed. I need no more in life than what I already have. I don’t need to own a house like this, I get to explore and restore many more than I can afford. Let us inspire the ones we can reach. Talk about the beauty of caring for what we already have, the fulfilment of being in between here and there.

🇸🇪 så stod jag i den här garderoben, blicken fäst mellan det nära och fjärran. Jag behöver inte mer i livet än vad jag redan har. Jag behöver inte äga ett sånt här hus, jag får utforska och restaurera mycket mer än jag har råd med. Låt oss inspirera dem vi kan nå. Prata om skönheten i att ta hand om det vi redan har, det meningsfulla av att vara mitt emellan här och där.

What was the fuss?

I was rewarded the (IMO) highest honour in my Industry in Sweden. The organisation for gentle caretaking of our building heritage - - chose me!

Translation of the nomination:

“This years winner is one who lifts the hands knowledge to preserve our cultural heritage and environment. With traditional knowledge and a creative mindset a lot of structures is saved for the future. With a perspective that lets all the old materials get an optimal longevity, a sustainable future is created on a grass root level.

This years winner shares, in a very pedagogical and inspirational way, different techniques and tips in social media. Joy and energy flows through their wish to help others to dare take on restorative work. The spreading of knowledge around reusing in all steps lets old faithful servants pay off their environment debt.

This years winner combines future with the past so that past generations craftsmanship is revived. We are confident that in a time and an industry that is embossed by wear and tear mentality, the cultural heritage and craftsmanship has a central role to play to pinpoint the short sighted, careless and unnecessary window replacements that takes place throughout the country. That by showing that it IS possible to save windows and doors.

A window restoration process typically includes about 40 different stages. To simplify you can deconstruct the process into three general categories:

• Carefully removing what needs to be removed (paint, putty, fittings, glass, damaged wood)
• Preparing everything (sanding, cleaning, priming, rust protection, repairs)
• Putting it back together (glazing, painting, installing fittings)

Sometimes it’s uncomplicated, but it’s always complex. And that’s the beauty of it ❤️

🇸🇪 En fönsterrestaureringsprocess innefattar vanligtvis cirka 40 olika steg. För att förenkla har jag kokat ner processen i tre allmänna kategorier:

• Att försiktigt ta bort det som behöver tas bort (färg, spackel, beslag, glas, skadat trä)
• Förbereda allt (slipning, rengöring, grundning, rostskydd, lagningar)
• Sätta ihop allt igen (glasning, målning, montering av beslag)

Ibland är det okomplicerat, men det är alltid komplext. Och det är en del av tjusningen ❤️
