We are pleased to see the Ministry of Home Affairs proposing a potential licensing framework for Debt Collection agencies, to be administered by the Police Licensing and Regulatory Department (PLRD) which presently regulates security and private investigation agencies.

On account of inter alia the numerous reports made against errant debt collectors behaving inappropriately, proper regulation would provide not only greater protection to debtors, but increase credibility amongst agencies, whose services legitimate creditors would otherwise be reluctant to employ due to the stigma surrounding 'debt collection'.

Kudos to the PLRD, in whom we have the greatest confidence to administering this new legislation! More information can be found in the link below.
