When I was told to share my story, I was confused about why it mattered. After two weeks of reflecting, I realized that I have achieved so much and experienced so many things. My journey is diverse, filled with experiences to share—mostly trauma bonding, but hey, that’s life.

I went from a Polytechnic dropout focused on design to working retail full-time, interacting with all kinds of customers and doing inventory. I then dove barefoot into marketing. Each part of my journey touched on different skill sets, and now I see these skills coming together in my work at Mediahouse, even if it's not very obvious.

I faced a devastating loss and struggled with my studies. Failing classes and feeling lost led me to drop out. I used to tell people I didn’t go to tertiary education or that I was just working because I was afraid to admit I was a school dropout. I would hide at home because I was ashamed.

In a low-income household, there is no such thing as "mental health"—you still need to work. My mom referred me to multiple jobs, and I worked each for a short period before moving to a full-time job at a retail store selling shoes. Six months into that job, listening to my coworkers complain about their children, I realized this was my friend circle. Life became stagnant and no longer felt worthwhile. So, when my counsellor sent me a brochure about the Hatch Immersive+ program, I took it (it was also free). Graduating from the program and working on my portfolio gave me hope that I could work in a "corporate" environment and that my skill set was valuable. I used to hate doing my portfolio, thinking it was tedious, but now it gives me confidence.

What a turn, I never saw myself here. I thought I’d be in customer service forever, but my journey took many turns, leading me to this incredible place. I’ve learned so much about myself and it has taught me that if you work hard and trust the opportunities handed to you, you’ll end up where you’re meant to be.

I hope that what I shared today can empower youths or people who walked similar paths as me—those who are struggling, those who are scared—to give you hope and confidence in walking your career path or just life in general.

Hi everyone! I'm Vattey, a Gen Z marketing person at Hatch Mediahouse.

Before joining Mediahouse, I envisioned a straightforward career path, possibly in a different industry altogether. Initially, I thought I would have a career in retail, selling shoes, and that would be where I’d stay, until I joined the Hatch Immersive+ program which opened my eyes to new possibilities, allowing me to explore different career paths. This then landed me with an internship with a clothing company, where I learned how marketing intersects with business. This experience fueled my interest in the marketing industry and led me to Mediahouse.

The idea of stepping into the world of marketing and media was both exciting and intimidating. I thought my internship would be a brief three-month thing, a stepping stone to something completely different. Little did I know, this journey would turn into a transformative experience, and now, I've been with Hatch Mediahouse for an entire year.

I met the right people at the right time. This journey has been anything but straightforward, filled with surprises and growth. It's been delightful to grow into my pants, embracing every challenge and opportunity along the way.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me throughout this journey. Special thanks to Azrin for reaching out to me; to Anya, my mentor during my time at Immersive+ and now my team lead, for their invaluable insights and constant support; and to my supervisor, Eric, who believed in me every step of the way during my internship.
