A fire can turn life-threatening in just minutes.

On 1 September, a fire broke out in the living room of a third-floor flat at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian.

A 68-year-old resident was found unconscious and later passed away.

Three others were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and breathlessness, while about 30 residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This incident also reminds us that smoke can be just as dangerous as the flames themselves.

At home, fire preparedness can make a critical difference:
• Ensure smoke or fire detection systems are working properly
• Keep escape routes and doorways clear
• Have suitable fire safety equipment readily accessible
• Know your evacuation route and get to safety quickly if a fire cannot be controlled safely
• Never re-enter a smoke-filled or burning unit
• Call SCDF

731 Hyundai Avante Hybrid cars in Singapore are being recalled over a potential fire risk.

The issue involves an overheating component in the vehicle’s power control unit, which could cause thermal damage and, in some cases, fire.

It’s another reminder that as hybrid and electric vehicles become more common, fire preparedness needs to keep pace.

For premises that accommodate EVs and hybrids, consider:
• EV-specific fire safety measures
• Suitable containment and response equipment
• Clear emergency procedures
• Proper staff training and awareness

Lithium-ion battery incidents can behave differently from conventional vehicle fires, so the right preparation matters.

If you notice smoke, unusual smells, overheating or warning signs from a vehicle, move to a safe location, exit the vehicle and keep your distance.

A vehicle fire can escalate quickly, even during an ordinary drive.

On 25 August, a GetGo car caught fire along Lornie Highway near MacRitchie Reservoir.

The fire involved the vehicle’s engine compartment, producing thick black smoke before SCDF extinguished the blaze.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Incidents like this remind us that vehicle fire safety and emergency preparedness matter.

If you notice smoke, a burning smell or signs of a fire while driving:

🚗 Pull over safely and switch off the engine
🔥 Exit the vehicle and move to a safe distance
📞 Call 995 immediately
⚠️ Do not attempt to open the bonnet if there is a significant fire, as the additional oxygen may intensify the flames
🧯 Only attempt to extinguish a small, manageable fire if it is safe to do so, and you have the appropriate equipment

Knowing how to react in those first few moments can help protect you, your passengers and other road users.

Four fatal fires in just 19 days have raised an important question: are our elderly and less mobile residents adequately prepared to evacuate during a fire?

Between 28 July and 16 August, four fatal fires occurred in HDB estates across Singapore.

All four victims were seniors aged 65 to 88, and around 220 people were evacuated across the incidents.

For elderly residents and those with mobility difficulties, an emergency evacuation can be particularly challenging.

Smoke, confusion, and stress can make existing mobility, hearing, or visual limitations even harder to manage.

Fire preparedness therefore needs to consider those who may require additional assistance.

Simple steps can make a difference:
• Keep corridors, doorways and escape routes clear of clutter
• Ensure family members know what to do and where to go during an emergency
• Identify elderly or mobility-impaired household members who may require assistance
• Check that smoke alarms and other fire safety equipment are in working condition
• Build awareness among family members and neighbours, so help can be provided quickly when needed

Fire safety must be inclusive.

An evacuation plan is only effective when it considers everyone who may need to use it.

Protecting our elderly and vulnerable residents requires preparedness not only within individual homes, but across families and communities.

Hotpot and table barbecue dining may feel routine, but fire safety still needs to be part of the experience.

On 11 August 2026, about 120 people were evacuated after a fire broke out at Yakiniku Like in Junction 8. An employee from a neighbouring store was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Following the incident, Kelvyn Ong, Managing Director of King Fire Group and a Certified Fire Safety Manager, joined Daniel Martin on CNA938’s TalkBack to discuss the broader fire risks associated with hotpots, table barbecues and other forms of table cooking.

With heat sources operating directly at the dining table, the risk comes from more than one factor.

Heat, combustible materials such as grease or food residue, and oxygen can create the conditions for a fire.

This risk increases when operators overlook equipment, ventilation, or maintenance.

For F&B operators, prevention starts with the whole system: keeping cooking equipment in good condition, maintaining clean filters and exhaust ducts, ensuring fire protection systems are serviceable, and making sure staff know what to do when something goes wrong.

Regular checks and proper records also matter.

A well-maintained system is only truly effective when its condition can be verified, and the people operating around it are prepared to respond.

If a table grill or hotpot catches fire, diners should move away from the area, alert staff and follow evacuation instructions.

Do not use water on cooking-oil, electrical or grill fires.

Only trained personnel should attempt firefighting, with the right equipment and a clear escape route.

Ultimately, restaurant fire safety is not about one appliance or one precaution.

It is about multiple layers working together to reduce risk and protect everyone on the premises.

A fire can start even when no one is home.

On 18 August, a fire broke out in the kitchen of a sixth-floor HDB flat at Block 408B Fernvale Road while the occupants were away.

SCDF had to force entry to extinguish the fire, and about 10 residents were evacuated as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

While investigations into the cause are ongoing, the occupants reportedly believed the fire may have been linked to an electrical short circuit at a kitchen power point.

The incident is a timely reminder that electrical fire risks can develop quietly and without warning.

Some simple precautions can help reduce the risk:

- Avoid overloading electrical sockets and extension points
- Check power points, plugs and cables for signs of damage, overheating or discolouration
- Switch off and unplug appliances when they are not in use where practical
- Make sure everyone at home, including helpers and family members, knows how to respond in an emergency
- Call 995 immediately when a fire is discovered

Early detection and a quick response can make a significant difference in preventing a fire from spreading.

When EV charging goes wrong, the fire risk may extend beyond the vehicle itself.

A two-storey terrace house in Alam Damai, Kuala Lumpur, was destroyed in a fire believed to have started in an electric vehicle being charged at the front of the property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The incident highlights an important consideration as EV adoption grows: EV fire safety does not stop at the vehicle.

Where an EV is charged, its proximity to buildings and combustible materials, the condition of the charging equipment, and the fire protection measures available can all form part of a wider fire safety strategy.

For homes, condominiums, commercial buildings and carparks accommodating EVs, preparedness should evolve alongside the technology.

Quick action matters, but knowing when to call for help matters too.

A blue recycling bin in Fengshan recently caught fire.

Thankfully, no one was injured, and the damage was minimal.

According to a post by Fengshan Member of Parliament Hazlina Abdul Halim, a PCF Sparkletots teacher responded quickly with a fire extinguisher.

When the fire could not be safely contained, SCDF was alerted to put out the flames.

The incident is a useful reminder of why basic fire safety knowledge and access to the right equipment can make a difference during the crucial first moments of a fire.

If you encounter a fire:
- Use a fire extinguisher only if the fire is small, and it is safe to do so
- Always keep a clear escape route behind you
- If the fire cannot be controlled safely, evacuate and call 995 immediately
- Never put yourself at unnecessary risk trying to fight a growing fire

Preparedness is not just about having fire safety equipment nearby.

It is also about knowing how to use it, and when to step away and let trained firefighters take over.
