Empathy or Vulnerability? Which should leaders choose in the current climate?

Leaders have always had to walk the talk. The more visible the example, the more chances for the actions and behaviors to be followed. So when staff don't see leaders practicing what they preach, it is no surprise that nothing much changes. The pandemic has forced everyone into change. Leaders become particularly exposed because not only must they deal with strategy and re-prioritisation, they must also change their attitudes and beliefs, especially around core concepts like supervision, assessment and development.

An empathetic leader, as compared to a vulnerable leader, is likely to be better responded to at work. The ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes as you decide and think through what to do next, is a proven leadership skill. And it can be trained and practiced.

A vulnerable leader threatens the hero-model view most of us develop early in our careers. So demonstrating vulnerability, in our cultural context, is often problematic both for the leader and follower, as it brings into question resilience, adaptability, and overall strength and confidence.
