Being silent isn’t always about being shy or withdrawn. It may be about quiet strength and deep humility.

Never discount silence as weakness or ignorance until you get to know more about that individual. Only then can you determine their true character and intentions.

The loudest individuals may not always be the strongest while the quietest individuals may not always be the weakest.

Revealing true personalities takes time, effort, and trust.

Ultimately, relationships becomes more meaningful when we learn about others beyond what’s on the surface!

Getting to know people is not about singularity but about diversity.

Whether it’s during interviews, during networking events, or even during catch up with friends, I always try to learn something about people that is outside of their main subject matter expertise.

Knowing someone who is good at one thing is just one dimension of their colourful and creative personality. Making an effort to understand their other interests gives us a deeper understanding of that individual.

How many of us are IT professionals who are also accomplished musicians or expert pizzaiolos, lawyers who are accomplished martial artists, chefs who are accomplished painters, and so on.

We are all truly amazing individuals who have so many talents beyond what’s shown on the surface.

Life is full of diversity. It is always a happier place when we can tap into our instinctive curiosity and understand people at a deeper level!

Go ahead and probe deeper with some of the people you've known for years. I bet you'll be surprised with what you will find out!

From deep anxiety to insomnia to possible health problems, being a Founder CEO is an extremely lonely and very isolated world.

I’m not talking about being surrounded by an engaging team and enjoying all that excitement (and pain) while operating your startup (because that is the fun part!), I’m talking about, as the ultimate decision maker with the most to lose, the weight of responsibility on your shoulders to ensure this startup survives for yourself and to make everyone successful as they sacrifice so much to be on this journey with you.

Being a Founder CEO is truly an emotional roller coaster ride consisting of deep valleys with sky high peaks and everything in between. Success or failure, we learn so much about ourselves. We learn about how low we can drop and still come back swinging or about how much we can achieve that was never though possible.

Although this article is a little dated, it’s still 100% spot on nevertheless. Enjoy!

HR recruitment is one of the toughest challenges startups face in their journey to success.

Finding the right people to believe in your vision and are willing to defer meaningful financial rewards into the uncertain future is extremely difficult and requires a bit of luck with lots of screening effort. If you can eventually gather the right team together, you'll be able to move mountains and see a clearer path to business success.

With the wrong team, no matter how good your product / service is or how big the market potential is, you will either see mediocre success or worse still, see a downhill trend to failure.

Never forget about the people who went into battle with you to make your startup a success and make sure to reward them appropriately as your business grows as a result of their efforts.

I've hired rockstars as well as duds in my serial entrepreneurial journeys and while it's impossible to achieve 100% hiring success, it's really about how fast you recognise a problem and taking the appropriate course correction actions to get you back on track. Acting too slow to make changes will be that fine line between success and failure in fragile startups!

Entrepreneur's make salary sacrifices upfront and defers their immediate gratification for money to a later date.

Most corporate employees expect immediate salary compensation that reflects their current experience level and are less interested in deferring a significant portion of their salary to the future.

There is no right or wrong answer to this. Our career choices define how we look at money and both approaches can generate riches that will enable us to reach our financial goals.

Which side are you on?

For me, I have high tolerance and high risk appetite to accept deferral of immediate financial rewards to the future based on startup business outcomes!

During this time of global crisis, most people will turn inward and hunker down to ride out the storm. They believe that there isn't much that can done as this global pandemic is outside of their control and they must protect what's left of their assets.

Others will look at this crisis, see opportunities and figure out a way to be different to succeed.

Truly successful people will always find opportunities in good and bad times. Success is a mental state and our actions (or inactions) stem from either fear or confidence.

Which side are you on?

For me, I choose to be different to succeed during these times of opportunity!

Whilst we, at The Association of the Telecommunications Industry of Singapore (ATiS), will not be holding any networking events for the next several months, we will continue to support the Singapore telecom industry by providing relevant content through articles contributed from our industry subject matter experts at the association.

Each month for the next 4 months, we will be publishing an article written by a member of ATIS' executive council and these articles will focus on topics within their subject matter expertise.

First up, written by yours truly at StrateValue Pte Ltd, I present to you a topic that has always been a thorn in the side for all financial and P&L managers who need to spend on telecom resources to support their global business.

This article goes out to all business managers who wish they had the ability to reduce their telecom budgets without sacrificing performance or quality.

Next month, Michael Ang will be writing about cybersecurity within a networked world. Stay tuned for that!

Enjoy!

During this period of pandemic concern with COVID-19, we must not let fear weaken our quality of life. Instead, we must use this fear to find alternative and perhaps more creative ways to enjoy life while this global concern is being resolved.

Fear is a big motivator to success if we put effort to prevent ourselves from being backed into a corner where there are very limited options.

We must also not blame others as well and work within ourselves and with others to find solutions to our challenging situation.

Let’s stay positive, happy and healthy and while we can and should be conservative to ensure we and our loved ones are safe from this viral outbreak, let’s also enjoy life to it’s fullest within the joys of what we have in front of us. ☺️
