The Singapore government has said that it is not tenable to subsidise electricity consumption in the long term, as citizens must mentally prepare for higher electricity bills in the wake of the ongoing crisis. The government has said that they will subsidising extreme fluctuations, however it would not be realistic to subsidise every increase, however small.

Gazprom, the largest natural gas company in the world that is headquartered in Russia, is continuing to falter under the sanctions of the Ukraine and Russia conflict. While this affects European countries the most, Singapore is not immune to the effects of Gazprom being unable to liquidate assets, as they have trading units within Singapore.

While it will not affect Singapore as much as countries like Germany, which is heavily reliant on Gazprom's natural gas, we have already seen increased prices at the pump and in general, inflation is starting to hit Singapore. As this conflict has affected all companies around our sphere, we hope that through collective action we can ease this pressure and return to normalcy.

The trading arm of Russia’s gas giant Gazprom PJSC is under increasing pressure as clients and peers flee in response to the war in Ukraine, posing a risk for energy markets from the U.K. to Germany and Singapore.

Oil and gas prices have reached record highs due to the conflict in Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia, potentially even reaching $200 per barrel.

However, there are many countries looking for solutions to ease the burden on their citizens. Countries like Ireland and Portugal are lowering fuel taxes to shield consumers from paying so much more money for fuel.

It is a difficult time now for businesses and consumers alike. Nevertheless we shall continue to do our part in easing the burden faced by our customer during such unfavourable periods.
