A fire door is part of the building's protection against heat and smoke. A doorstop, parcel or piece of furniture can prevent it from doing its job.

📋In shared corridors, staircases and workplaces:
📋Do not wedge a fire door open.
📋Keep the swing path clear.
📋Report a damaged closer or a door that does not shut properly.
📋Never obstruct an exit route.

Approved automatic hold-open systems are different: they are designed to release when the fire alarm or smoke detector activates. An improvised doorstop is not.

A charging phone or power bank needs space for heat to escape. A pillow, mattress or duvet traps heat around the device and can hide early warning signs.

Before bed tonight:
🔔Charge indoors on a hard, clear surface, away from bedding and exit routes.
🔔Stay awake and nearby while the device is charging; unplug it when charging is complete.
🔔Use a suitable, undamaged cable and adaptor.
🔔Stop if you notice unusual heat, smell, swelling or hissing.
🔔If a battery is hot, swollen, hissing or smoking, stop using it and keep people away. If it is smoking or venting, get clear and call 995.

At least seven fire incidents were publicly reported in Singapore from 31 August to 6 September. This is not a complete Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) incident log.

One person died. Six other people were taken to hospital. About 100 people were evacuated from incidents with published evacuation figures.

1 Sep - Bukit Pasoh Road: An electrical-room fire at 43 Bukit Pasoh Road disrupted electricity supply to some nearby premises. No injuries were reported.

1 Sep - Lorong Lew Lian: A living-room fire at Block 8. A 68-year-old man was found unconscious, taken to hospital and later died. Three other people were taken to hospital. About 30 people were evacuated.

2 Sep - Yew Tee: A kitchen fire at Block 684D Choa Chu Kang Crescent. About 20 people were evacuated. Two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

3 Sep - Tampines: A fire involving an electrical distribution box at Block 477 Tampines Street 43. About 20 people were evacuated. One person was assessed for shortness of breath and declined hospital conveyance.

3 Sep - Bukit Panjang: A vegetation fire measuring about 30 metres by 20 metres near Bukit Panjang Ring Road and Fajar Road. No injuries were reported.

4 Sep - Seletar West Road: A vegetation fire measuring about 150 metres by 50 metres near a heavy-vehicle park. No injuries were reported.

5 Sep - Simon Lane, Kovan: A two-storey house fire. About 30 people were evacuated. One neighbour was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, and an adjacent house was partially damaged.

The reported causes remained under investigation. We should not fill those gaps with guesses.

Hot oil can superheat the water, turning it rapidly into steam and throwing burning oil out of the pan.

💧 A water-mist extinguisher can be suitable for a cooking-oil fire when it has the right delivery system and testing.

• Slide a lid over the pan and leave it covered.
• Never pour in water.
• Never carry the burning pan.

• Class A: ordinary combustibles such as paper, wood and cloth.
• Class B: flammable liquids.
• Class F: cooking oils and fats.
• Lithium-ion batteries: check for a specific tested capability.

Do not assume a general-purpose extinguisher covers the risk.

⚠️ Only attempt a small fire when you have the right equipment and a clear exit behind you.

If a battery is smoking, hissing or venting:
• Move away.
• Alert others.

At least nine fire incidents were publicly reported in Singapore from 24 to 30 August. This is not a complete Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) log. No deaths were reported in these nine incidents. Three people were taken to hospital. More than 300 people were evacuated from the incidents with published evacuation figures.

🔥 24 Aug - York Hotel: A kitchen fire at 21 Mount Elizabeth. Guests were evacuated. One guest injured an ankle, was taken to hospital, and was later discharged.

🔥 24 Aug - Maxwell Food Centre: A hawker-stall fire at about 4.30am. SCDF forced entry and put it out. No injuries were reported.

🔥 24 Aug - Little India: A first-floor kitchen fire at 405 Race Course Road. Three people left the unit before SCDF arrived. Four people were evacuated from neighbouring units. One person was assessed for smoke inhalation and declined hospital.

🔥 25 Aug - Lornie Highway: A car engine fire near MacRitchie Reservoir. No injuries were reported.

🔥 25 Aug - Ava Road: A bedroom fire in a fourth-storey unit at 2 Ava Road. More than 70 people were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

🔥 27 Aug - Clementi West: A kitchen fire at Block 729 Clementi West Street 2. About 30 people were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

🔥 28 Aug - Sembawang: A refuse-compactor fire at Nordcom II on Gambas Crescent. No injuries were reported.

🔥 29 Aug - Seletar Link: A vegetation fire of about three hectares. No injuries were reported.

🔥 29 Aug - Choa Chu Kang: A bedroom fire at Block 287 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2. About 200 people were evacuated. Two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and were later discharged.
