A few days ago (14 Oct), President Xi Jinping was in bustling Shenzhen in Guangdong Province to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Between 1950 and 1980, hundreds of thousands of Chinese, facing hunger and poverty in the mainland, risked their lives by swimming across the treacherous waters to neighbouring Hong Kong. A successful crossing meant a new life. Failure meant imprisonment or death.

Spinning for a Fight 30 Years After

Many among us like to say negative things about others. Way back two thousand years ago, Roman historian Titus Livius (BC 64 โ€“ AD 17) had the talent for it. He loved to make Romans look good and their enemies look bad.

For instance, he claimed that Gauls were unreliable and lazy people, the Greeks were savvy but slimy people, and the Carthaginians were cruel, cunning and deceitful. But the aim of Liviusโ€™s misinformation or propaganda was not because he disliked non-Romans. His aim was to support Emperor Augustus who had recently united Rome after a long civil war.

Slightly more than a hundred years ago, in the summer of 1916, one of the deadliest battles in human history began. This is the Battle of the Somme in the First World War.

About three million soldiers were involved that summer when Britain and France fought against Germany. Within four months, about one million soldiers had been killed or wounded.

Sometimes, Your Enemy Is Your Friend

In a few daysโ€™ time (1 Oct), China will celebrate its 71st anniversary of the founding of the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China. It marks the end of the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949) between the forces of Mao Zedongโ€™s Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalists Party) forces under Chiang Kai-shek.

Actually, the Civil War began much earlier in 1921 when the CCP was formed. Both the CCP and the Kuomintang wanted to unite the country against foreign control. Japan was the last foreign country to leave China in 1945 after its defeat in World War 2.

Using All Means To Stay On Top

by Keewee TAN
September 19, 2020

A few days ago (17 Sep), the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruled that the imposition of tariffs on Chinese exports by President Trumpโ€™s administration was in violation of WTO rules.

Since the WTO is an international institution which the US helped to create in 1995, the US has breached its own principles. To many, this hypocrisy is not surprising.

The 2nd Exclusive Premier Club Members Meeting on 10th June 2020 is happening on 2nd September 2020!

Dr Tan will be touching on the topic:
What to do to protect our investments against rampant money printing?

Forced by Covid-19, the US Fed has been creating money to help the global stock markets. Such measures have pulled up global stocks from their deep dives seen earlier in the year. But money printing is supposed to lead to higher consumer prices. Why is it higher consumer prices have not been seen yet? When will higher prices visit us, if at all?

This talk will explain why higher consumer prices have not hit us yet. It will then list out the asset classes to go into and avoid when higher consumer prices eventually hit us.

We look forward to seeing you on 2nd September 2020! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Doing a Coca-Cola in the South China Seas

by Keewee TAN
July 18, 2020

Seventy five years ago this weekend, the three dominant leaders of World War II came together to decide how to administer the defeated German nation. This was the Potsdam Conference (17 July to 2 August 1945).

Besides the main German issue, the agenda included many other post-war issues. One of these issues was the sovereignty over the group of South China Sea islands that Japanese forces captured from the Chinese and occupied in WWII.

At the end of the Potsdam Conference, it was agreed, in signed documents, and in front of witnesses, including Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek, that the group of islands, including the Paracel Islands, the Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands, would all be handed over to China.
