What Happens during the Haj?
The Haj takes place in Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and last month of the Islamic calendar, and it starts two days before Eid ul-Adha and lasts through the three-day sacrifice feast. As a result, the Haj lasts a total of five days.

A lesser pilgrimage (umrah) takes place in Mecca on the first day of Haj. After circling the Kaaba, the structure placed in the center of the Masjid al-Haram, the most significant mosque in Islam, Muslims retrace Hagar's steps between two hills. Some Muslims elect to go to Medina, which is home to the Prophet Muhammad's tomb, before landing in Mecca. Spending the night in the Mina Valley brings the day to a close.

Pilgrims depart for Mount Arafat on the second day of the Haj, where they will spend the afternoon. They will also ascend the hill known as Jabal al-Rahma, the site of the Prophet Muhammad's last sermon. Muslims will travel 5.5 kilometers west of Arafat to Muzdalifa later in the day as the sun begins to set. While taking a bus is an option, many Muslims decide to walk instead.

Muslims perform the final three days of Haj, which coincide with Eid ul-Adha, by casting stones in Mina, circling the Kaaba one last time, and removing the Ihram (a holy state they enter to complete the journey). Women will cut a lock of hair, while men will shave their heads as a symbol of rejuvenation. Over the course of the three days of Eid ul-Adha, Muslims will complete the Haj journey as well as perform the traditional killing of livestock as a sacrifice and give portions of the meat to the underprivileged, in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Why do Muslims perform Haj?
The annual pilgrimage to the mosque of Allah in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is known as the Haj, and it is one of the five essential tenets of Islam. It must be performed at least once throughout a Muslim's lifetime. Every year, during the final Islamic month of Dhul Haj, almost 2 million Muslims travel to the Holy Kaaba to undertake the Haj (Pilgrimage). Muslims are severely forbidden to commit any transgression while in the sacred state of ihram. This includes physical altercations, sexual activity, and even trimming of hair or nail-cutting. Muslims are encouraged to maintain their composure while on the journey.

Who performs Haj?
Every Muslim who is of sound mind and is physically and financially capable to undertaking Haj once in their lifetime is required to perform it. The designation of Haji is also added to the names of people who complete the pilgrimage. Children are not required to conduct Haj, but if they like to, they are welcome to do so with a parent or guardian. In addition, someone can appoint a "proxy" to do the Haj on their behalf if they are ill or have a long-term illness.

What is Haj?
Haj is a pilgrimage made to the Kaaba, the “House of Allah” in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the religion's holiest city. All adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of making the pilgrimage and supporting their family while they are away from home are required to perform the Haj at least once in their lives.

Haj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, alongside Shahadah (oath that one believes there is no god but Allah (God), Salat (prayer), Zakat (almsgiving) and Sawm (fasting of Ramadan).

Haj is a protracted religious journey undertaken by Muslims to purge their souls of all worldly sins; it implies both an afterlife voyage and an internal journey of good intentions. The pilgrimage rituals are carried out over a period of five or six days, from the eighth to the twelfth or thirteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar.
