Here's why it matters for the global nuclear industry.

The first attempt collapsed when gas was discovered in the Gulf of Thailand — the economics dissolved overnight. The second collapsed after Fukushima, when a proposed 𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗪 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 became impossible to defend publicly.

Both failures had the same root cause: the technology didn't match Thailand's conditions.

The 𝗣𝗗𝗣 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 targets 𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗪 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗠𝗥𝘀 — 𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗪 each in the Northeast and South — with construction from 2032 and commercial operations by 2037. SMRs address both prior failure modes: passive safety systems remove the Fukushima argument; 300 MW units fit the grid without expensive upgrades.

The partnership architecture is real: 🇰🇷 𝗞𝗛𝗡𝗣–𝗘𝗚𝗦𝗧 MoU (June 2025), the 🇺🇸 𝗨𝗦-𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟮𝟯 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (July 2025), and private sector moves by 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 exploring molten salt reactor deployment.

Critically, the demand context has changed: 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀, 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 are pulling investment toward countries that can offer clean, firm baseload. Thailand's competitors — Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia — are all moving on nuclear. The SMR procurement window is opening, and it will define market positions in Southeast Asian nuclear for a generation.

Last Friday, around 200 international firms joined Kapil Bansal, Hiten Sutar and Zaf Coelho for a 60-minute briefing on what the post-SHANTI moment actually opens up for global players in India's nuclear sector.

Three things landed:

India's path to 100 GW will live or die by how well the Indian Nuclear Insurance Pool plugs into that global architecture.
