Tech Term of the Day: Malware

Malware is a harmful software built to damage systems, disrupt operations, or gain unauthorized access to data. It can arrive as a “helpful” attachment, a fake update, or a compromised website and it does not always announce itself.

Common forms include ransomware (locks files for payment), spyware (silently steals information), and trojans (hide inside legitimate-looking apps). The impact can range from slow devices to a full business outage, data loss, and compliance or regulatory exposure.

Reduce your risk with a few essentials:
📌keep systems patched,
📌enforce MFA,
📌maintain tested offline backups,
📌deploy endpoint protection with active monitoring
📌train teams to spot phishing and suspicious downloads.

Just because public Wi-Fi has a password does not mean it is safe. In places like cafes, hotels, airports, or events, hackers can still spy on your internet activity, create fake Wi-Fi networks that look real, or steal your login details and personal information while you’re connected.

If you must use public Wi-Fi:
- Avoid banking, payroll, admin panels, and password resets
- Use a trusted VPN before opening email or business apps
- Confirm the network name with staff (do not guess)
- Turn off auto-join and file sharing
- Prefer your phone’s hotspot when possible

Public Wi-Fi is convenient but convenience should not come at the cost of compromised credentials.
